This is a key Non-Executive Director role with a specific focus on finance, audit, and risk offering the opportunity to provide independent assurance and scrutiny at Board level within a dynamic and evolving primary care organisation. As a Non-Executive Director, you will play a critical role in strengthening financial stewardship, governance, and accountability across the Alliance. You will bring senior-level financial expertise to support robust decision-making, ensuring the organisation delivers value for money while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance. You will work collaboratively with the Board and executive team, providing constructive challenge, insight, and oversight particularly in relation to financial performance, audit processes, and organisational risk.

Main duties of the job

  • Contribute to Board discussions, ensuring effective governance, accountability, and use of public resources
  • Provide independent challenge and scrutiny to support high-quality, evidence-based decision-making
  • Ensure patient outcomes, service quality, and stakeholder interests remain central to Board decisions
  • Support organisational development through sharing expertise, insight, and networks
  • Bring a finance, audit & risk focus to:
  • Provide expert oversight of financial performance, sustainability, and value for money
  • Scrutinise complex financial information and challenge assumptions underpinning financial plans
  • Support and contribute to Audit and/or Finance Committees, strengthening assurance frameworks
  • Oversee the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and governance systems
  • Engage with internal and external audit processes, ensuring appropriate responses and follow-up
  • Provide assurance to the Board on financial governance, compliance, and organisational risk

About You

We are looking for someone with significant senior-level expertise in financial stewardship, audit, and risk management, and will provide independent challenge and assurance to the Board.

Person Specification

  • Financial Leadership and Stewardship
  • Senior level experience in financial management, financial governance, or accountancy, gained at Board or equivalent level.
  • Strong understanding of public sector finance, including capital and revenue controls, value for money, and financial sustainability.
  • Ability to scrutinise complex financial information, understand the drivers of financial performance, and provide constructive challenge.
  • Professionally qualified accountant is highly desirable.
  • Audit, Risk, and Assurance
    • Experience of audit and risk frameworks, including internal control, assurance mapping, and governance systems.
    • Proven track record of contributing to or chairing Audit and/or Finance Committees, or equivalent governance forums.
    • Strong understanding of internal and external audit processes.
  • Governance and Compliance
    • Deep understanding of corporate governance, accountability, and Board assurance frameworks.
    • Experience of regulatory environments, compliance requirements, and organisational risk management.
  • NHS / Public Sector Context
    • Strong understanding of the NHS financial regime.
    • Awareness of the financial challenges facing the NHS.
