We are looking for new Trustees to join us in caring for Covent Garden’s heritage and historic buildings. Covent Garden Area Trust (CGAT) is the head lessee of the ‘Protected Lands’ comprised of five separate leases for plots of land and buildings of historical interest located within central Covent Garden. Our mission: “to celebrate, conserve and enhance the special character of Covent Garden”.

We invite individuals from all backgrounds who will contribute to the diverse skills, views, and professional knowledge within the Trust. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in Planning and Heritage, Surveying, Architecture, Law, and social media.

Trustee Role Description:
  • Attendance at 12 meetings per year on the first Tuesday of each month.
  • Alternate meetings are formal Council board meetings; the other meetings are reserved for urgent matters, workshops, presentations or away days.
  • Optional subcommittee meetings are held twice monthly. Meetings are hybrid.
  • Trustees who miss three consecutive board meetings are deemed to have resigned from the role.
  • Time to review meeting papers and to prepare to lead on agenda items (when applicable), attend ad hoc meetings or working groups, and to contribute to decisions made at or outside meetings, and to provide advice when needed.
  • Initial three year appointment, but this can be extended if desired.
  • The role is voluntary (unpaid), but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed (our expenses policy contains more details).
  • The role carries legal and financial responsibilities; however, Trustees are covered by Trustee Liability indemnity insurance.
  • New trustees will be taken through our induction process and will be provided with the information, training and support needed to carry out the role.

We aim to diversify our board to encompass a wider set of viewpoints and knowledge that will help us continue to make decisions that benefit Covent Garden and attract a wide variety of visitors and consumers to the area. We are currently updating our planning and heritage guidance document so those with a background in planning and heritage policy would be very welcome. We would also like to better publicise the Trust’s work and remit and to emphasise the importance of the work that we do. A background in either Marketing or social media would be helpful in achieving this. Although professional knowledge and experience are important, we also value applications from those who are passionate about Covent Garden and its history. We encourage all with an interest to apply, whether you have Trustee experience or not.
