Applications are invited for a substantive post for the position of Consultant in Elderly Medicine.
The Elderly Medicine department has expanded rapidly over the past 7 years and this additional post will bring the number of Geriatricians within the department to thirteen.
Such rapid growth has offered many opportunities for service development in Elderly Medicine providing a comprehensive portfolio of specialist elderly care services. The team has an inclusive and flexible approach to developing services and supporting one another. Interested applicants should be keen to replicate this further. The post offers exciting opportunities for a successful candidate who wishes to influence the rapid developments occurring within this energetic and dynamic department. This post will support Acute Frailty services either directly or through other subspecialty support.
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS FT is an RCP Future Hospital exemplar site and continues to transform its urgent care pathways, by working closely with our community health and social care providers, as well as Western Cheshire CCG to deliver an integrated model that increases the utilisation of ambulatory and short stay care whilst supporting enhanced care delivery within the community. The Trust has a strong Medical Education department, and the post holder would have a significant educational role.
The appointee will be expected to have a specialist interest of acute geriatrics. The post is to support an already successful acute geriatrics team based within the Countess of Chester
The role will include:-

  • Regular ward rounds on inpatient frailty ward, supporting junior doctors and the multidisciplinary team. Attending daily mdts. Named consultant for 14 inpatients plus outliers (indicative figures 0 to 4 patients). – i.e. 300-350 patient reviews per month (based on daily ward rounds).
  • General elderly clinic and a subspecialty clinic (subspecialty clinic flexible to candidates interest- movement disorders, falls, stroke, community). Indicative clinic numbers are 8 new and 32 reviews per month for a weekly 3 hour clinic.
  • β€œFront door” acute geriatrician sessions. Supporting the emergency department, rapid response team and acute physicians with specialty inreach providing early advice and input into care and management plans of frail elderly in the acute setting.
  • Supervision of junior doctors.
  • Attendance to and input into speciality and departmental meetings.

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 5916 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 411,000. This includes 361,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
