Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) relies on a wide range of technologies. As Lead DevOps Engineer (Cloud Platform), you will lead the development of our cloud platform for national systems underpinning CTP operations that keep the country safe. This role is aligned to the Lead DevOps Engineer role set out within the Digital and Data Profession Capability Framework (DDAT).
You’ll join a new team of cloud engineers, working flexibly from home and with a home office space in our air‑conditioned operations centre located east of Birmingham, with easy access from the M6 and M42. A London office location is also available. This is a great opportunity to assist in building a world class cloud services platform.
The Cloud Platform Team supports the development and operation of the cloud platform through tools, environments and best practice. The team are responsible for underpinning support and development processes including managing tools, environments, central infrastructure as code control, maintaining development standards and building software that automates processes and systems on AWS and Azure.
A Lead DevOps Engineer leads one or a small number of related project teams and contributes to the development of the strategic direction. At this role level, you will:
- act as a technical platform (product) owner, developing medium to long term strategies for product lines
- provide technical leadership and guidance through coaching and mentoring
- lead the sharing of knowledge and good practice
You will work on a variety of platforms and tools so being a lifelong learner with the ability to quickly learn technical skills are key to your success.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A solid background in modern software engineering or platform infrastructure support.
- A proven track record in creating and maintaining infrastructure as code platforms, cloud environments or similar.
The Lead DevOps Engineer (Cloud Platform) will also help plan projects and be involved in project management decisions as part of agile service delivery teams. The Cloud Platform team is a key component of CTP's IT strategy which operational activities will depend upon.
Key Tasks: As the Lead DevOps Engineer (Cloud Platform), you will:
- Own the development and operation of the cloud infrastructure
- Testing and deploying product updates.
- Identifying and resolving issues.
- Implementing integrations.
- Improving automation and monitoring.
- Being the technical product owner for the cloud infrastructure.
- Provide team and project leadership to ensure standards are met.
- Work with developers and engineers to ensure that software development follows established processes and works as intended.
- Maintain and update processes as required.
- Ensure personal and team workload is effectively managed, prioritised and issues are escalated to line management as necessary.
- Ensure adherence to required policies, standards, controls and best practice.
- Create, maintain and review technical documentation to ensure all services are maintained and knowledge is shared.
- Proactively monitor cloud environments to help prevent issues arising.
- Proactively drive continuous improvement across cloud services.
- Assist in mentoring and developing the team.
- Deputise for the Infrastructure Cloud Lead as required.
