Cotswold Archaeology is a growing and sustainable business employing over 350 staff across four offices. We are seeking ambitious Project Supervisors (PS) and talented Project Officers (PO) to advance their careers and lead large archaeological projects across the UK. Our projects include schemes in the field and upcoming projects for the next two years, offering leadership opportunities in some of the most significant archaeological work in the country. All PSs, POs, and SPOs are expected to lead in publishing our work, with dissemination and outreach being core to our activities. Our award-winning training programs support career progression from site archaeologist to managers and specialists.

The Package

  • Starting salary above the CIfA minimum: Senior Project Officer - £39,495 - £42,108 (Dependent on Experience)

Membership of CIfA at PCIfA level is desirable. A current CSCS Health and Safety Card or pass is preferred; if not held, passing the CITB HS&E Operatives Test is required, arranged and paid for by CA. Personal protective equipment will be provided. A full driving license and willingness to drive company vehicles are essential. Projects are located near our offices, with opportunities for away projects involving accommodation and subsistence (£24/night).

Job Specification

  • Post Title: Senior Project Officer

  • Responsible for: Project Supervisors, Archaeologists, Trainees
  • Purpose: Lead archaeological projects, ensuring performance, quality, and understanding.

Main Activities:

  • Manage project delivery on time, within budget, and according to health and safety standards.
  • Develop staff through training, coaching, and improved practices.
  • Ensure quality of archaeological records and oversee archive compilation.
  • Author reports to publication standard.
  • Report project progress to Project Managers and liaise with stakeholders.
  • Maintain administrative records.
  • Manage vehicles, plant, and equipment.
  • Ensure health and safety compliance, including risk assessments.
  • Assist in pre-project planning and liaise with external parties.
  • Act as deputy for the Project Manager as needed.
  • Promote public awareness of CA's work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Personal Specification

  • Essential: Knowledge of British archaeology and large project supervision experience.
  • Understanding of business needs, budgets, and legislation.
  • Report writing skills, staff management, and health and safety knowledge.
  • Full manual driving license and ability to drive company vehicles.
  • Word-processing and database skills.
  • Membership of CIfA at least ACIFA.
  • Desirable: Specialist knowledge in archaeological periods or subjects.
  • Potential for academic publication writing.
  • Survey skills, including GPS and CAD knowledge.
  • Possession of a current CSCS Health and Safety Card (training can be provided).
