Cotswold Archaeology, one of the largest and most respected archaeological practices in the country, is hiring Experienced Archaeologists for a 6‑month fixed‑term contract in Needham Market. The starting salary is £29,844 per annum, paid on a 37.5‑hour week. The role will involve fieldwork, both manual and machine‑assisted, on a variety of projects across England and Wales. Candidates will be rostered on away projects, for which we provide accommodation and a subsistence allowance of £24 per night. The contract may also include additional lieu and overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the successful completion of fieldwork projects, including fieldwalking, evaluation, excavation, finds processing, data entry and archiving.
  • Accurately record investigation data using pro‑forma sheets, scales, photographs and in accordance with CA procedures.
  • Recover artefacts and environmental samples per CA protocols.
  • Undertake machine supervision/watching brief and survey duties as delegated.
  • Assist the Project Leader with mentoring and training of less experienced staff.
  • Conduct rapid manual excavation of features and accurate recording/interpretation of data.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of archaeological periods and practice.
  • Interact courteously with sponsors, clients, other bodies and the public.
  • Complete moderate‑complexity stratigraphic matrices.
  • Use Leica GPS equipment confidently.
  • Contribute to departmental processes via learning reports, feedback and performance reviews.
  • Complete all required training.
  • Adhere to CA’s Health & Safety policy and systems.

Personal Specification

Essential

  • Knowledge and understanding of archaeological practice.
  • Demonstrable competence and varied commercial experience gained from professional British archaeological practice.
  • Proven ability to undertake rapid manual excavation and accurate recording/interpretation of data.
  • Ability to complete moderate‑complexity stratigraphic matrices.
  • Survey trained with demonstrable ability in the use of Leica GPS equipment.
  • Demonstrable experience and capability in supervision of machine excavation.
  • Full manual driving licence; experience with 4x4, vans and minibuses.
  • Willingness to undertake away work, including extended periods.
  • Organised administrative skill set.
  • Initiative, willingness to learn new skills and take on additional responsibility.

Desirable

  • In‑depth knowledge or expertise in finds, environmental archaeology, survey or GIS.
  • Experience of area or site supervision.
  • Ability to contribute to or compile typescript reports.
  • Membership of CIfA.
  • Experience of driving 4x4 vehicles, vans and minibuses.
  • CSCS/EUSR card or equivalent.
