We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Hardware Engineer with FPGA design expertise to work on our range of data, video and control systems for the motorsport and automotive industries. The successful applicant will play a hands‑on role in hardware development from concept through to delivery in addition to leading and mentoring the hardware team. Some of our products contain FPGA technology, and part of the role is developing and supporting these products. You will work in a wide-ranging group composed of many engineering disciplines, project management, quality and manufacturing as well as external partners to create pioneering electronics solutions.
The Role:
- Design, development and technical support of electronics hardware for motorsport and automotive products of varying complexity up to multi‑board, multi‑processor with FPGA all tightly integrated.
- FPGA champion, primary contact point for any FPGA work in designs.
- Circuit design, analysis and documentation.
- Developing design verification and validation testing procedures.
- Liaising with the management/program team on project deliverables.
- Representing Cosworth in technical discussions with customers and partners.
- Consider the health and safety, environmental and energy impact of all activities.
- Support the Company’s compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 by following company policy and best practice.
Candidate Profile:
Essential
- Degree qualified with a bias towards electrical and electronic engineering. However, applicants without a degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable experience will also be considered.
- FPGA, Analogue and digital electronics design experience, including concept and detailed design work.
- Solid understanding of quality engineering processes.
- Able to clearly formulate and communicate complex design concepts.
- Experience of working in cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively - both as an individual and as a member of a team.
Desirable
- Design and development of vehicle-based systems in automotive, motorsport or similar industries.
- Altera FPGA experience Cyclone and Max parts, coding in VHDL with test coverage experience.
Analogue and Digital Electronics Experience:
- Microprocessors and high-speed digital design.
- Micro‑controller interfacing.
- Automotive interfaces: CAN (FD), LIN, FlexRay Ethernet.
- Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth.
- I2C, SPI, UART.
- Amplifiers, Filters.
- Sensor signal conditioning.
Power Electronics:
- Power supply design.
- Knowledge of Triac/SCRs, IGBTs & FET DC Motor control.
- Actuator drives.
Design Techniques:
- Robust design techniques including FMEA.
- Circuit simulation & design tolerance analysis.
- Circuit electrical and thermal rating analysis.
- Design for test, including JTAG, HALT, HAST.
Experience of design and development in accordance with ISO 9001, ASPICE and ISO 26262.
