In this role, you will gain hands-on experience in critically appraising and interpreting complex statistics, planning and analysing clinical trial data, and synthesising evidence, with one-to-one training and mentoring from our experienced Statistics team.
Salary: A pro-rated salary of £25,800 per annum outside of London (£27,050 per annum in London).
Benefits: Statutory holiday allowance, flexible working hours and the chance to work from home 1 day per week, numerous internal training and mentoring opportunities and employer pension contributions.
Role Type: Full-time, temporary internship.
Start Date: We have start dates available in early 2026, including March and April, and you will be asked to state your availability on your application form. The internship will last for 3 or 6 months.
Location: This role is available in our Global Headquarters in Cambridge, as well as our London, Manchester, and Bristol offices.
Our Statistics team provide statistical and analytical expertise across Costello Medical, devising statistical analysis plans and performing data analysis within R, Excel, Stan and BUGS software. They are also responsible for communicating the methodologies and results in both written and oral formats to drug and device manufacturers, doctors and reimbursement agencies such as NICE in the UK. The statistical analyses vary across patient-level clinical trial data, observational study (real-world) data and published aggregate data. Our work involves a range of techniques such as basic statistical analysis of individual patient data, regression analysis, survival analysis and Bayesian network meta-analysis using both standard and emerging methods.
This internship is ideal for both graduates and current students who are looking to gain experience in the field of statistics within a commercial environment. You will be presented with the opportunity to apply techniques learned during your academic training to real-world problems in healthcare and medical science. You will work on projects involving data analysis and the communication of both methodologies and results in a variety of publications, value materials, health economic models or health technology assessment submissions.
You will typically be working on several projects across a variety of therapeutic areas at any one time, which could include critically appraising and interpreting complex statistical analyses, planning and performing analyses of clinical trial data or synthesising evidence using Bayesian and frequentist (network) meta-analysis techniques. The results of each analysis can feed into publications, value materials, health economic models or health technology assessment submissions. You will therefore be exposed to a wide variety of our services and a broad range of therapeutic areas. Interns receive extensive one-to-one training on the technical aspects of our statistics work, as well as project management and effective client communication.
During the internship programme, individuals performing well may be given the opportunity to extend their internship to 6 months (note that this is dependent on business need). When this happens, it allows our interns to further develop their skills and potentially gain experience of other areas of the company (again, dependent on business need as well as the individual’s interests). Additionally, there is the opportunity for strong candidates to apply for the Statistician role and join our expanding team on a permanent basis. Many of our Statistician Interns move into a permanent role at Costello Medical.
This internship is suited to recent graduates, as well as current students who are permitted to complete full-time internships either during the holidays or as a placement as part of their degree. In line with the company’s values, the successful applicant will be passionate about improving patient outcomes by applying their statistical knowledge and technical skills to the healthcare industry.
Essential requirements for the role are:
- An undergraduate degree-level qualification in a scientific or mathematical discipline (minimum/expected 2:1 or equivalent) with a focus on statistics and data analysis. A Master’s or PhD would be highly advantageous.
- A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong mathematical ability.
- Excellent written English.
- Advanced skills in Excel.
- A good knowledge of programming, with proficiency in R and an understanding of other similar languages.
- The ability to use your initiative and work independently, in addition to working collaboratively within project teams.
At Costello Medical, we warmly welcome applicants from academia who are looking to transition into a role within a commercial, industry-based setting. We understand the unique perspectives and valuable skills that academic professionals bring to our team. To support your career change, we offer comprehensive training, mentorship programs, and a work culture that fosters collaboration, growth and innovation. We are committed to facilitating a smooth transition and helping you thrive in an industry-based setting.
At Costello Medical, we are committed to fair and competitive pay. In line with the Real Living Wage, the salary on offer is:
- £25,800 per annum for colleagues based in office locations outside London.
- £27,050 per annum for colleagues based in the London office.
Interns also benefit from:
- Exceptional internal training and mentoring.
- Opportunities to contribute to pro bono and charitable projects.
- Regular company-funded social activities.
- Flexible working options.
You are required to submit your CV and a cover letter via our online application form. In your cover letter, you must explain why you think you would be suited to the role and why you would like to join Costello Medical, with examples to support both. Your CV should clearly state the dates of all qualifications and grades achieved where applicable. The recruitment process begins with a self-recorded video interview which will be reviewed by the Talent Acquisition team. Following this, you will be sent a timed proofreading assessment and a written assessment to complete in your own time. If successful, you will be invited to an interview with senior members of our Statistics team. Our standard recruitment process lasts around 1 month, however, this can be adapted if necessary.
Please note that this role does not meet the eligibility criteria for visa sponsorship, and you will therefore need the right to work in the UK independently from the company.
