As our Senior Highways Engineer (Traffic Management) within our Highways & Transportation Engineering Team, you will be responsible for designing and planning for all matters relating to traffic management at any temporary change in risk on the highways. You will oversee the engineering of the traffic management using a risk-based approach. Additional support to the Highways & Transportation Engineering design team will be essential and likewise reciprocated back in this role.
Please note that this role requires site visits to verify existing and proposed layouts, so flexibility and willingness to travel is essential.
Responsibilities
- Support the Traffic Management Lead
- Support the Traffic Management Manager
- Support the Deputy Traffic Management Manager, TSSs and Incident Support teams
- Design, manage and coordinate all matters relating to the traffic management design
- Implement a quality approach to the inspection and audit of TTM
- Ensuring the Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) or Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice (TTRN) are applied for and complied with
- Ensuring the TTM design and engineering enables a safe system of work for all, to accepted minimum standard e.g. as per Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8 and associated documents including the DMRB, CIS53 and relevant Raising the Bar documents
- Gain information from TM Managers for the TM packages and update any drawings
- Attend monthly Costain managers meeting
- Attend quarterly Costain standards meetings with the supply chain
- Assist with closing out observations in a timely manner with the TM team
- Costing/estimating assistance
- Support and assist the Highways and Transportation Engineering design team
- Support junior staff with learning and development related to TM design
- Responsible for achieving safe‐by‐design compliant, future proofed, cost effective and sustainable outputs
- Support all stages of project delivery, where required
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
- Significant experience within a highways & traffic management environment
- Understanding of NH / TfL procedures
- Basic understanding of Microsoft packages
- Full Driving licence
- Good communication skills
- Skills in computer aided design (CAD)
- The use of all forms of legalization in relation to the design of temporary traffic management engineering
Desirable
- Ability to prioritise
- Highly significant and proven experience within a traffic management design environment
- Manage and review design process from start to finish

- (IHE) TTM Engineering Professional Certificate. (Level 4)
- NHSS 12 Traffic Safety Supervisor
- NHSS 12D M7

- First aid in the workplace training
