We are looking to hire a Process Engineering Responsible Engineer (RE) who will manage the process design and engineering aspects of the programme, ensuring all specific nuclear licensed site requirements are met. Costain provides engineering services to the Energy, Water, Transport, Nuclear and Defence sectors. The Process Engineering Discipline primarily works on Energy Transition, Energy Resilience and municipal wastewater treatment projects across the full engineering project lifecycle including Feasibility, Concept, FEED and EPC/EPCm Detailed Design project phases.
The Process Engineering Responsible Engineer (RE) will manage the process design and engineering aspects of the programme, ensuring all requirements for the nuclear licensed site are met. This role requires an experienced process engineer with extensive knowledge of nuclear facility design to lead the process team on assigned engineering design projects. The RE will manage both internal engineers and external consultants or subcontractors, ensuring that designs are delivered on time, within budget, and in technical compliance. It is essential that all designs are safe, sustainable, and efficient to construct. A key responsibility is ensuring that management systems, including digital processes, are followed to provide stakeholder assurance.
Work on a hybrid, site‑based role in Cumbria – typically 3-4 days a week with occasional office attendance in Risley as per business needs. The role is suitable for someone based in the Cumbria region. Eligible candidates must be able to obtain security clearance (British National or 5 years UK residency).
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of process engineers on projects, studies and proposals, to execute the process engineering scope of work according to contract requirements, in compliance with company and client standards and procedures.
- Responsibility for discipline quality, programme and cost targets.
- Perform own design work and check work by others in accordance with company procedures.
- Approve project deliverables when authorised by the Process Engineering Technical Authority.
- Represent Process Engineering in discussions and meetings with client, vendors and third parties.
- Develop discipline programme activities/deliverables and interdependencies, plan for adequate resources and monitor and report design progress and man‑hour usage to the project management team.
- Work in a collaborative multi‑disciplinary project delivery team, through proactive liaison with other disciplines and ensure integration of Process Engineering design requirements into the overall engineering design.
- Ensure personal compliance with current company policy, relevant legislation and company and client’s requirements for Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental matters and work in such a manner not to cause personal harm or injury to fellow workers, client and subcontractor employees or the environment.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Significant experience in technical delivery and management roles in an engineering/consultancy environment.
- Significant years of experience within the Energy Industry with an emphasis on pre‑feasibility and feasibility studies.
- Experience with process modelling tools like UniSim, HYSYS, ASPEN Plus, VMGsim.
- Prepares technically correct, safe, and effective analysis and solutions.
- Works independently applying advanced techniques and analysis within the discipline.
- Provides less experienced engineers with guidance and training and checks their deliverables.
- Strong written and communication skills are essential.
- Experienced process engineering technical specialist.
- Recent UK project experience.
- Understanding of whole delivery process from work winning to scheme handover in a variety of sectors.
- Extensive technical, practical and leadership experience in the process discipline in the same or similar industry, including experience managing and leading multi‑disciplinary projects and teams.
- Collaborative, innovative and agile.
- Experienced customer facing capability with an ability to develop and influence relationships.
- Proven people skills and an effective communicator (written & verbal).
- Able to travel mainly across the UK and visit project sites/suppliers at short notice occasionally.
- Attention to detail, meticulous and methodical.
- Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
Desirable
- Good knowledge and experience across a range of sectors including oil & gas, nuclear, water, chemical, industrial.
- Knowledge and understanding of UK technical and regulatory standards and global best practice.
- Proven engineering and business system/software skills along with proven ability in line management, mentoring and team development.
Essential Qualifications
- Degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Minimum Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering or related fields, or Master’s would be preferred.
Desirable Qualifications
- Chartered Engineer preferred (MIChemE/FIChemE).
- All‑around experience in upstream/downstream segments and some exposure to energy transition would be preferred.
- Experience in class 5/4 cost estimation would be a plus.
