Senior Site Engineer – Costain Group PLC
Costain has been appointed as the Delivery Integration Partner by National Highways (NH) for the delivery of the £240m improvement of the Simister Island M60/M62/M66 interchange (M60 Junction 18), north of Manchester. As the Delivery Integration Partner, Costain will overhaul the busy junction, involving complex traffic management to keep tens of thousands of vehicles moving while construction takes place.
The Works Consist Of
- A new free‑flow ‘northern loop’ link road to take drivers directly from M60 eastbound to M60 southbound without exiting the motorway.
- M66 mainline southbound widening and southbound slip‑road realignment to allow for construction of the northern loop.
- A widened connector road from M60 northbound to M60 westbound – replacing the current single lane with two lanes.
- Adding an extra lane in each direction on the M60 Junctions 17 to 18 (increasing from 4 to 5 lanes) while retaining the hard shoulders.
- Upgrades to drainage, lighting, motorway technology, signage and signalling.
Reporting directly to the Agent, this role is to oversee delivery operations for a specific discipline (roadworks) to ensure all elements are delivered safely, to the required quality, on time and within budget, all in line with the scheme design and associated highway specifications and in compliance with the Development Consent Order requirements. This will include managing junior engineers and working alongside the site supervisory team and other disciplines (SHE, Stakeholder, Design/Engineering/Quality, Commercial, etc.). Applicants with motorway experience are preferred.
The role involves a mobilisation stage of 3–5 months before approximately 3 years of construction starting in June 2026. Post‑construction support for handover into operations will also be required.
Responsibilities
- Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with The Costain Way.
- Put safety above all else and lead by example.
- Promote a Right‑First‑Time approach to quality and avoid rework.
- Set clearly defined objectives for self and others to deliver plans; taking appropriate ownership and accountability. Identify and organise resources to accomplish tasks. Ensure plans have targets, measures and clear accountabilities.
- Be responsible for short‑term programming and sequencing of works aligned to the main Programme.
- Coordinate day and night time work scopes for effective programme delivery.
- Champion health, safety, sustainability and environment by putting personal safety and wellbeing at the heart of everything we do.
- Proactively manage your packages to Programme, identify risks and opportunities, monitor the budget and liaise with the planner and relevant QS to manage your works.
- Ensure permits, RAMS, QA documents are in place and completed as relevant to your works.
- Support and coach your engineers in delivering the works in your package.
- Achieve the required level of Quality, drive efficiency and continual productivity improvements, creating best practices for the team and adding value for our customers.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Good delivery experience in civils ground works, and structural steel works.
- Wider appreciation for Architectural fit‑out and M&E and Systems installation.
- Package management experience, including short‑term programming, budget monitoring and reporting.
- Knowledge and experience of NEC contracts.
- Able to support, coach and lead a team of engineers, supervisors and partners to achieve the team\’s tasks.
- Passionate about improving performance identifying opportunities to improve quality and productivity through best practice, process improvements and continuous improvement practices.
- Able to work and learn quickly in a fast‑paced, fun and dynamic environment.
- Care about doing a great job and exceeding expectations with the quality of what you do.
Desirable
- Experience working at Heathrow and/or a live operational highly regulated environment.
- A positive and proactive attitude.
- Proficient user of AutoCAD 3D, Civil3D, BIM360, Bentley MicroStation 3D Modelling and Point Cloud.

- Degree level/HNC/HND qualification in Civil Engineering and relevant professional experience.
- SMSTS.
- CSCS.
- Valid driving licence.
