The Community Relations Apprentice supports the Social Value and Community Lead in managing relationships with project stakeholders, including members of the public, local community, clients and other interested parties.
About the Project
Costain has secured extensive water sector work, including the Living Water Enterprise project with Northumbrian Water, valued at approximately £670m over 15 years.
What an Apprenticeship at Costain offers
Your apprenticeship will involve both on-site, on-the-job training and off-the-job learning with a suitable training provider. You will receive support from your project line manager, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider.
Responsibilities
- Respond to email queries, gather information, and present information in reports.
- Report social value data.
- Create monthly newsletters.
- Help establish contact with key stakeholders.
- Support the team in building community relationships.
- Assist in producing written and face-to-face communications.
- Help respond to complaints and enquiries.
- Attend community events, exhibitions, and project open days.
- Promote and attend local community fundraising opportunities.
- Support outreach initiatives to add value for the community.
- Submit social value data for bid submissions and awards.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Ability to prepare engagement plans with minimal support.
- Support internal Community Relations forums.
- Take ownership of personal safety and risk assessment in the community.
- Understand data protection compliance when managing complaints & enquiries.
- Comply with sensitivities and restrictions on sharing project information via social media.
- Identify basic social value outcomes and inputs.
- Demonstrate stakeholder empathy and active listening.
- Be aware of risk consequences to cost or reputation.
- Understand contractual and legislative compliance with service level agreements.
Desirable
- Understand project programme relevance to external communication planning.
- Demonstrate the value of good community relations.
- Support colleagues in presenting at internal and external events.
Qualifications and Personal Attributes
- Five GCSEs, A*–C or equivalent, including Maths and English.
- A passionate, organized individual who can meet deadlines.
- Creative, keen interest in the latest technology, and problem-solving ability.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Team player and self-motivated.
- Computer and Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Numerate.
- Must provide passport or right-to-work documentation if invited for interview.
- Travel to site may be required.
