This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Senior Engineer (Highways & Transportation) to join a growing team of over 130 Civil & Structural Engineers and Designers. Our department manages a diverse range of projects, from Concept Studies to Detailed Design, including road safety engineering, which offers a variety of interesting work and clients. The industries we work within include: Roads, Water, Transportation, Energy, Nuclear, Defence. This role presents a unique chance to engage in meaningful projects across multiple sectors. Working in a multi-disciplinary team, the focus is on delivering infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing civil and structural (highways) advice, analysis, calculations, reports, and specifications.
- Leading small projects and sub‑tasks from a technical perspective.
- Effectively communicating designs to BIM teams, other disciplines, construction personnel, and stakeholders.
- Feeding into highways discipline engineering technical input for projects and/or proposals; including design engineering, preparation, and some reviewing of works documentation/gap analysis.
- Managing smaller scale deliverables for clients (internal and external).
- Organising and assisting with junior staff, including allocating work and ensuring delivery against planned timescales.
- Mentoring and developing graduates and less experienced engineers.
- Production of high‑quality C&S engineering deliverables to schedule, budget and client satisfaction.
- Work to applicable national and international codes of practice, legislation and company/client standards and procedures to ensure compliance.
- Maintain and develop awareness of current relevant codes and standards.
- Implement company and, where applicable, client/project policies and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with other disciplines to ensure that interfaces are clearly defined and correctly designed.
- Communicate appropriately with other departments, project personnel, vendors and clients.
- Production and development of highway specifications.
- Optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
More specific tasks could include:
- Defining client requirements.
- Assisting with RRRAP assessments.
- Assisting with Traffic Management design and approvals.
- Design of new carriageway/footways, assessment of existing infrastructure, checking and approving C&S documentation from others.
- Supporting the PM/Project Lead in identifying change, progress reporting, tracking of issues, risks and resolutions.
Required Experience:
- Significant experience in highways & infrastructure at all stages of the project lifecycle.
- Very good knowledge of design working practices and installation requirements of the discipline across a range of industries.
- Very good knowledge of UK legislation and standards.
- Awareness of risk identification, quantification, management and of HSE requirements.
- Client‑facing liaison and interaction.
- Proven experience with multiple clients.
- Eligibility for Security Clearance – British National or 5 years UK residency.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience with new and historic highways, optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
- Experience in leading small teams and supporting more junior engineers.
- Project Management experience.
- Requirements Management experience.
- Traffic Regulation Order experience.
Qualifications – Essential:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, or similar.
- Minimum IEng Civil, or substantial experience to compensate.
- Membership of a Professional Industry Body.
- Full driving licence.
Qualifications – Desirable:
- Actively working towards Chartership with ICE, CIHT or similar.
- Further industry recognized training and qualifications.
- Project Management experience.
- CDM qualifications.
- Security Clearance, or capability.
- National Highways Passport.
- CSCS card.
