As a Mechanical Responsible Engineer (RE), you will manage the mechanical design and engineering aspects of the Programme, meeting the specific needs of the nuclear licensed site requirements. You are responsible for the design being delivered on time, within budget, and technically compliant, ensuring all designs are safe, sustainable, and efficient to construct. This hybrid role is based in Manchester, Warrington or Cumbria. The role is part of a 15‑year contract to deliver critical utilities infrastructure upgrades at Sellafield’s Cumbria decommissioning site.
Project Scope Utility services include:
- Steam (LP and HP)
- Water (Wastewater, Raw, Domestic & De‑mineralised)
- Compressed air
- Bulk chemical supply
- Sewage treatment plant
Programs include refurbishment or replacement of:
- On‑site steam distribution system & support structures
- On‑site water distribution system & support structures
- Off‑site water supply and distribution system, including domestic water treatment plant & storage reservoirs
- On‑site compressed air generation & distribution system
- On‑site bulk chemical storage tanks & associated equipment
- De‑mineralised water treatment and conditioning plant
- On‑site chemical distribution system & support structures
- Sewage treatment plant
- Improvements to rail and road tanker off‑load facility
Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with the client, Costain, external partner design teams, project staff, and supply chain.
- Lead and develop a programme‑led design delivery culture, embedding carbon minimisation, Production Thinking / MMC principles, and reporting on design progress and technical risks.
- Ensure designs meet all applicable national and international codes, legislation, company and client standards, and procedures.
- Set out the mechanical design and engineering needs for the Programme, check they are defined and understood by the wider team, and ensure adherence to the Design Management Plan (DMP).
- Oversee quality control and technical assurance of mechanical design deliverables to ensure sufficient detail for each design stage.
- Support the delivery plan with clearly defined outputs and deliverables, monitoring and measuring design progress.
- Manage mechanical design change to prevent unnecessary or disruptive change and support contractual correspondence.
- Provide judgment and advice to create optimised solutions that meet programme requirements and objectives, influencing procurement and construction teams.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a relevant management apprenticeship with industry experience.
- Chartered member of a professional institute (e.g., IMechE or CIBSE).
- Minimum current BPSS, with the ability to achieve SC clearance on a medium‑term basis.
Desirable:
- Master’s or postgraduate degree.
- Experience in the nuclear sector, or multiple infrastructure markets/sectors.
- Experience developing and implementing procurement and contract strategies for design and mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of UK legislation and standards; extensive experience of utility infrastructure design.
- Experience in project management training or skills.
Security clearance support is provided. The successful candidate must be able to achieve the relevant security clearance.
