The role will work on the HS2 project, the UK's new high‐speed rail network, which connects eight of the ten largest UK cities with reliable high‐speed services and unlocks capacity on existing railways. Costain is delivering the HS2 Rail Systems Tunnel and Lineside Mechanical and Electrical Systems across the entire HS2 route, with a scheme value of £500m. The scope covers installation of construction and permanent tunnel ventilation, systems, lighting, electrical networks, fire mains and other key safety elements.

As the Head of Health, Safety, Security & Wellbeing (HSSW) you will head the HSSW function, managing the HSSW management system, assurance programme, performance management and the Love for Life Behavioural programme, and implementing effective event investigation processes to exceed client expectations and embed continual improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and provide line management to direct reports and liaise with the wider SHE Team.
  • Support and influence Contract Leadership, Clients and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Group SHE Management System and Contract Performance.
  • Ensure delivery of training and coaching by competent individuals to enable the contract team to implement the Group SHE Management System.
  • Actively participate in appointment and ongoing assessment of Contract Supply Chain Contractors.
  • Support delivery of annual Contract and Group SHE Objectives.
  • Develop and implement a Contract SHE Assurance programme to ensure compliance with company and statutory requirements.
  • Ensure all unplanned events and assurance findings are categorized, investigated and lessons shared in line with the Group SHE Management System.
  • Timely reporting, analysis and use of SHE data to support and influence the Contract Leadership Team and develop data‐based improvement plans where required.

Experience

Essential

  • Maintain own knowledge and competency in HSSW, including appropriate qualifications and professional membership.
  • Extensive and well‐documented health and safety‐related experience.
  • Significant experience leading sector, divisional or business unit functional departments.
  • Major and mega‐project experience.
  • Experience managing large teams.
  • Collaborative behaviour.

Desirable

  • Experience in heavy underground engineering (mining and tunnelling).
  • Extensive and well‐documented relevant SHE experience in the construction‐engineering industry.
  • Significant experience managing large, geographically diverse teams.
  • Experience working with multi‐national/international workforces.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Relevant Degree, Diploma or equivalent NVQ Level 6.
  • Working towards MIEMA, CMIOSH or an equivalent.

  • Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 Line Managers toolkit or equivalent.
  • CMIOSH, MIEMA or equivalent.
