Costain supports EDF Energy to maximise the lifespan of its five generating UK nuclear power stations, and manage the Defuelling and Decommissioning Preparations programmes for the remaining three nuclear power stations. Costain's role is to provide project controls services.

As part of this work, Costain will develop people capability in core project control skills and provide specialist support to EDF's Central Technical Organisation to improve project performance and deliver cost efficiencies. This is a remote role that will have some travel to site once a month.

We have an opportunity on our EDF Project Controls Resource Framework, to be involved in the exciting challenge of defueling and decommissioning the AGR nuclear power station. This is a first of a kind endeavour in the UK.

As our Estimator, you will be responsible for preparing accurate and underpinned cost estimates that are required for effective project/programme control, taking account of the constraints of cost, time, scope definition and purpose of the project in accordance with the EDF estimating Procedures and Guidance Notes.

As Senior Estimator, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing your estimating team.

Responsibilities
  • Line management, including leading, mentoring, and coaching your team (Senior role only).
  • Support the development of an estimate strategy through a gated project process.
  • Prepare and develop estimates and basis of estimates for investment strategy and feasibility studies through a project gated process.
  • Produce estimates in compliance with EDF Energy standards and procedures, and issue estimates in accordance with the project life cycle, including reports specific to project needs.
  • Regular interfacing and integration with the Project Team to ensure alignment between estimate and Scope / Project Plan.
  • Collate and analyse historical cost data for benchmarking purposes.
  • Participate in the Project Risk Management process and when required, prepare/assist the production of Project Risk Logs for input to the estimates.
  • Carry out estimate uncertainty and event risk analysis and modelling to provide provision for uncertainty (contingency) recommendations.
  • Provide input to the tender review process, including claim evaluations and valuations of significant changes.
  • Contribute to the drafting and updating of project IMS Gate Papers to ensure that they contain the relevant estimate data.
  • Participate and contribute to the monthly fleet-wide Estimating Peer Group.
Qualifications
  • MACostE desirable.
  • NRS experience (Nuclear Restoration Services).
  • Technical aptitude with a high level of understanding of Project Management, Engineering, Regulatory, Procurement, Construction, Installation and Commissioning activities and their relation to project costs.
  • An analytical bias with the ability to provide solutions to issues.
  • Ability to co-ordinate disparate information into a coherent estimate.
  • Able to develop strong internal and external relationships and able to deliver against stakeholder expectations.
  • Experience in the use of estimating methodologies coordinating information & interpreting technical specifications and engineering drawings of varying complexity, to produce a coherent & accurate estimate.
  • Knowledge of preparation or assessment of applications, valuations, cost/value reconciliation.
  • Strong MS Excel skills and a working knowledge of MS Word and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in the use of Estimating software packages and SAP (Desirable).
