The role will work on the HS2 project, the UK’s new high‑speed rail network. Costain is delivering the HS2 Rail Systems Tunnel and Lineside Mechanical and Electrical Systems works for HS2 across the entire HS2 Route (HRS02). The scope includes the design, supply, manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance (until handover) of tunnel and lineside M&E systems, including tunnel services within shafts, tunnels and cross‑passages, and low‑voltage electrical power distribution in the open route. Costain will also design, supply, install, test and commission tunnel ventilation systems. The value of the scheme at award is £500 m.
Responsibilities
- Support the design, review and implementation of electrical systems for HRS02 HS2 open‑route lineside works.
- Interface and coordinate with other HS2 Rail Systems contractors, including track, signalling, telecoms, OHLE, and HV power.
- Review technical documentation, drawings and specifications.
- Undertake material selection and prepare associated technical approval and acceptance documentation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, including UK rail industry standards and HS2 Works Information.
- Identify, assess and manage technical risks, supporting effective problem resolution.
- Produce quality documentation such as ITPs and installation verification check sheets.
- Support assurance, quality and safety processes throughout the project lifecycle.
- Interface with installation and construction teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable and aligned with site requirements.
- Provide engineering support during installation, testing and commissioning activities.
- Work closely with the immediate Engineering team to coordinate requirements and programme delivery.
- Liaise with the procurement team to ensure appropriate electrical equipment is specified and sourced.
- Maintain close coordination with Design, Safety and Planning teams.
- Promote and support the implementation of Costain values and behaviours across the project.
Essential Qualifications
- Previous experience working on rail infrastructure projects in the UK.
- Experience in electrical engineering within large‑scale infrastructure or rail systems.
- Strong understanding of electrical design principles and relevant UK rail industry standards (e.g. Network Rail standards, BS 7671).
- Good understanding of earthing and bonding practices in a rail environment.
- Experience working within a main contractor or major project environment.
- Sound knowledge of electrical installation practices, switchgear and associated equipment.
- HNC, HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering (or a related discipline).
- ECS / CSCS Card.
- High standard of written and spoken English.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working on major UK rail projects (e.g. HS2, Network Rail).
- Knowledge of SCADA, M&E systems or rail systems integration.
- Experience with points heating and junction lighting installations.
- Familiarity with optical fibre and copper data cable installation practices.
- Chartered or working towards professional accreditation (e.g. IEng/CEng).
