About the project
The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services.
Job Description
The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin‑bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds. The Group Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Department is responsible for ensuring that Costain operates in a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible manner through the implementation of the Group SHE Management System and Group SHE Plan. The Group SHE Management System provides a framework and standards for managing safety, health and environmental risks and opportunities and aims to prevent injury, ill health and provide a safe working environment and protect and enhance the natural environment in balance with socio‑economic requirements throughout all our activities and operations. The department’s purpose is to protect employees, the community, and the environment while ensuring that Costain operates sustainably and complies with relevant legislation and regulations.
To assist the Contract Environmental function to enable the Contract / Operational Teams to implement the Group SHE Management System. To gain experience, knowledge and develop relationships with stakeholders, whilst maintaining an independent and objective view of Environmental Performance on the Contract.

At Costain we have a variety of apprenticeships of offer, working on projects around the UK, in the sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels, and with a number of partners and joint ventures. The level and training provider for your apprenticeship will depend on the skills you present at assessment centre or interview. The Early Careers Team will register you with a suitable training provider who can support the delivery of your qualification. Being an apprentice means you work both on‑job with your project at site, and off‑job with the provider. When taking on one of the many apprenticeships on offer by Costain, you will be supported by your project line manager and the team, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider of your academic qualification. The training provider may be a college, a university or even an independent training provider. You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by your local team and line manager, and you will be given time to carry out your studies with the provider. Your on‑job training will be in line with the work available on site but will afford the opportunity to ensure that you are given on‑site experience required to meet the technical and competency levels in order to achieve your apprenticeship goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist the SHE and Contract Operational and Supply Chain Teams and develop relationships with stakeholders to successfully implement the Group SHE Management System
- Assist and develop skills to enable the future delivery of training, to allow the contract team to successfully implement the Group SHE Management System
- Assist the SHE, Contract Operational and Supply Chain Contractors in the delivery of the Contract Environmental requirements
- Assist in the delivery of the annual Contract and Group SHE Objectives
- Assist with the Contract Environmental Assurance programme to ensure compliance with company and statutory requirements
- Actively assist with the investigation of all unplanned events and close out of assurance findings, ensuring lessons are shared in accordance with the Group SHE Management System
- Assist with the timely reporting, analysis, and use of environmental data to support the Contract Leadership Team
Qualifications
Essential- Equivalent of 5 GCSEs, grades A*-C or 9-4, including Maths, Science and English
- A Level or equivalent 3 A Levels to include Maths and a physical science (Grade B in Maths B, C or above) and/or BTEC or equivalent L3 Extended Diploma - Engineering related (Grade DDM or above)
- Ability to work as part of a team in a safe and productive
- A willingness to learn a trade on an exciting project
