An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious finance professional who is looking to progress their career and join a FTSE 250 listed construction business with a track record of delivering high profile infrastructure solutions. As construction, consulting and digital partners we engineer solutions to meet critical national needs, transforming the performance of the infrastructure that connects, protects, and powers people’s lives. Costain provides engineering services and delivery partnership in energy resilience, transition and transmission networks.
The Finance Manager for the Energy sector will be the custodian of all financial information for the sector and collaborate with the leadership team to drive performance for both Costain and its clients. The role will work closely with the wider Natural Resources finance team, including the Sector Finance Business Partner and Divisional Finance Director, to provide insight and confidence and deliver outputs according to the business reporting cycle. This role is home‑based with travel to our London/Manchester and Aberdeen offices.
Responsibilities
- Support the contract teams in managing the financial performance of the contracts.
- Own the process for managing and generating high‑quality, reliable financial information and support other functions, including commercial, with joined‑up sector reporting.
- Support the preparation of the monthly sector performance pack, explaining both financial and non‑financial performance.
- Ensure financial control, governance, segregation of duties and process flows are fit for purpose and in line with Group guidelines.
- Administer all cash book, accounts receivable, accounts payable and general ledger books of entry and processes accurately and timely, working closely with the Costain Finance Shared Service Centre.
- Manage all aspects of cost and time management with process flows to client invoicing and payment.
- Analyse, track, report and forecast revenue generated from professional services activities including rates, utilisation and profit margin.
- Maintain accurate records of all hours worked by directly employed labour by setting up and maintaining appropriate systems and procedures, ensuring accurate timesheet generation and cost allocation on a weekly basis.
- Maintain monthly balance sheet reconciliations with action plans.
- Act as finance point of contact for internal, external and client audits.
Qualifications
- Experience in a similar role partnering with leaders to drive performance (desirable).
- Qualified accountant with a recognised professional body (or near qualified).
- Commercially aware, able to provide data‑led insight and convey financial information to non‑financial stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, able to relate confidently to people at all levels, both verbal and written.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and an ethical approach to data, respecting confidentiality and appropriate decision making.
- Experience developing and implementing new processes, tools, controls, and reporting.
- Hands‑on capability to use new systems and processes.
- Expertise in Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
