Costain's strong partnership with Thames Water continues into AMP8 as we have secured our position on their Capital Delivery Programme. The Thames Water AMP8 Capital Delivery Programme (2025-2030) covers a mix of non‑infrastructure projects ranging from smaller capital maintenance to large civil new build schemes. Working on a variety of water and wastewater projects you will be involved in the design, construction, commissioning and putting to work of contracts to ensure they are completed in the most efficient manner.

Our apprenticeship programme offers you the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification with a quality training provider to develop your technical and behavioural skills. The programme offers a permanent position and a great opportunity for growth and development with growing levels of responsibility as you progress into a challenging and rewarding role. There are a wide range of apprenticeships available, both in levels of qualification and length of study. Costain offers a variety of apprenticeships working on projects around the UK in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels, and with a number of partners and joint ventures. The level and training provider for your apprenticeship will depend on the skills you present at assessment centre or interview. The Early Careers Team will register you with a suitable training provider who can support the delivery of your qualification.

Being an apprentice means you work both on‑site with your project and off‑site with the provider. When taking on one of the many apprenticeships on offer by Costain, you will be supported by your project line manager and the team, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider of your academic qualification. The training provider may be a college, a university or an independent training provider.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with setting out
  • Preparation of work plans and reports
  • Assist with developing construction methods
  • Assist with the preparation of briefings
  • Site reporting and monitoring of site progress
  • Site inspections and surveys
  • Assist with monitoring and ensuring the works are carried out safely and to design requirements
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to safety
  • Contribute to safety initiatives
  • Promote and maintain a positive safety culture on the project

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Have an enthusiasm for engineering and in continuing their educational journey through an apprenticeship.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent of 5 GCSEs, grades A*-C or 9-4, including Maths, Science and English
  • A Level or equivalent 3 A Levels to include Maths and a physical science (Grade B (in Maths) B, C or above) and/or BTEC or equivalent L3 Extended Diploma – Engineering related (Grade DDM or above)
  • Other Level 3 qualifications may be considered
  • Vocational equivalents at level 3 or higher will also be considered as equivalent to UCAS points
  • Functional Skills Level 2 will also be considered as equivalent to GCSE Grade 4/C

Additional Requirements

  • Candidates will be required to achieve appropriate security and medical clearances; these will be instigated on receiving a conditional offer of employment.

  • As some of our project sites are based in remote locations, it is worth noting that you will be required to have the ability to travel to the site.
