Maintenance Engineer (Nights), Barking in London

Cory is one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies. Cory operates the Barking site where we are developing a brand‑new Waste Transfer Station facility due to open in early 2026, in addition to its existing Transfer Stations operated on behalf of the Western Riverside Waste Authority (Smugglers Way and Cringle Dock), City of London (Walbrook Wharf) and Tower Hamlets (Northumberland Wharf). We are currently recruiting for a night‑shift Maintenance Engineer to add to the team at Barking. This key role supports the Maintenance Manager to carry out planned preventive maintenance, repairs, modifications, fabrications and other engineering aspects of the Barking Transfer Station and provides cover for other transfer stations when required.

Key responsibilities

• Complete planned preventive maintenance programmes (PPM) for the contract in a timely manner and to a high standard.
• Work in accordance with Cory procedures and legislation, including PUWER, LOLER and LOTOTO (lock‑out).
• Adjust and install alternative component parts and functions within process equipment to adapt and enhance equipment and ensure timely replacement/adjustment to avoid potential interruption or reduced efficiency.
• Carry out mechanical & electrical tests as required by regulation and legislation.
• Attend breakdowns and provide technical support.
• Assist management team to ensure stores are maintained and the stores database is up to date.
• Assist with the implementation of the Integrated Management System (IMS), which requires engineering support.
• Assist management team with risk assessments, method statements, permits to work to ensure safe systems of work.

Shift Pattern

The successful candidate will work on a permanent night shift – Sunday to Thursday 23:00 to 07:00. During the initial training period and until the new Transfer Station is operational, you will be required to work on day shift.

Qualifications

• Technically qualified with proven experience in a similar environment.
• Experience working with mechanical equipment, control panels, including fault finding and PLC interrogation.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
• Good computer skills (Microsoft Office programmes).
• Experience of working with heavy mobile plant.
• Proven experience of working at height.
• Flexible and able to work well and quickly under pressure.
• High level of attention to detail.
• Team player with excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
• Either (or both): Mechanical engineering background – City & Guilds Level 3 or above. Electrical engineering background – 17th or 18th Edition, Installations, Testing & Inspecting.
• Able to work extra hours or attend job‑related training, including weekends if needed.
• Holds a full, valid UK driving licence.
