Cory is one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies. Cory operates the Barking site where we are in the process of developing a brand-new Waste Transfer Station facility due to open in early 2026, in addition to its existing Transfer Stations operated on behalf of the Western Riverside Waste Authority (Smugglers Way and Cringle Dock), City of London (Walbrook Wharf) and Tower Hamlets (Northumberland Wharf).
We are currently recruiting for a night-shift Maintenance Engineer to add to the team at Barking. This is a key role supporting the Maintenance Manager to carry out planned preventative maintenance, repairs, modifications, fabrications and other engineering aspects at the Barking Transfer Station and will provide cover for other transfer stations when required.
Key elements of the role:
- Reporting to the Maintenance Manager and Site Manager, the successful candidate will complete the planned preventative maintenance programmes (PPM) for the contract in a timely manner and to a high standard working in accordance with Cory procedures and legislation, including PUWER, LOLER and LOTOTO (lock-out).
- Have the ability to adjust and install alternative component parts and functions within the process equipment, to adapt and enhance the process equipment and ensuring timely replacement/adjustment to avoid potential interruption or reduced efficiency due to malfunction or wear.
- Carry out mechanical & electrical tests as required by regulation and legislation.
- Attend breakdowns and provide technical support.
- Assist management team to ensure stores are maintained and stores database is up to date.
- Assist with the implementation of the Integrated Management System (IMS), which require engineering support.
- Assist management team with Risk Assessments, Method Statements, permits to work to ensure Safe systems of work.
Shift Pattern:
The successful candidate will be required to work on a permanent night shift – Sunday to Thursday 23:00 to 07:00. During the initial training period and until the new Transfer Station is operational, you will be required to work on day shift.
The individual we are looking for will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Technically qualified with proven experience in a similar environment.
- Experience working with mechanical equipment, control panels, including fault finding and PLC interrogation.
- Excellent communication skills both verbally and written.
- Good computer skills (Microsoft Office programmes).
- Experience of working with heavy mobile plant.
- Proven experience of working at height.
- Flexible and able to work well and quickly under pressure.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Team Player with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Either (or both): Mechanical engineering background – City & Guilds Level 3 or above; Electrical engineering background - 17th or 18th Edition, Installations, Testing & Inspecting.
- Able to work extra hours or attend job related training, including weekends if needed.
- Holds a full, valid UK driving licence.
Please note: While this role is based at our Barking Transfer Station, you may be required to work at other Transfer Stations if required especially during the initial training period.
