Founded in the mid‑late 1800s and incorporated in 1896 as W.M. Cory & Son, Cory has evolved from a coal distribution company on the River Thames into one of the UK’s leading recycling and waste management companies. We are excited to recruit two Engineers for our expanding operations at the Riverside 2 Energy‑from‑Waste Plant and Barking Transfer Station, both coming online in 2026. The primary purpose of this role is to assist the Captain and Mate in all aspects of a safe and efficient towage operation, including the maintenance of safety equipment on tug and barges, with additional yard‑based duties.

Typical duties:

  • Mooring, unmooring and making up tows of barges in a safe and seamanlike manner.
  • Full compliance with all international, national, local and company safety and environmental legislation, regulations, codes, procedures and guidance.
  • Maintenance of all safety equipment on the tug.
  • Pumping out the compartments in barges as directed by the Captain.
  • Reporting of all incidents and safety hazards in accordance with the specified procedure.
  • Reporting of any defects on the tug and/or barges to the appropriate person.
  • Full participation in emergency exercises.
  • Assisting in the training of apprentices.
  • To undertake any other duties that are relevant to the position.

Job requirements:

  • Skills and experience in waste management (waste oils/WEE/hazardous materials).
  • Lighterage / Marine Civil Engineering industry experience.
  • Workboat / Towage deck‑based experience.
  • Manual handling.
  • IOSHH / NEBOSH IT skills.

Qualifications:

  • AEC part 12 or STCW III/3 Engineering certificate.
  • Fire Fighting (STCW or BML approved).
  • Personal Sea Survival Techniques.
  • First Aid.
  • ML5 or ENG1 Medical (valid).
