We are supporting a well-established light engineering services business as it prepares for the retirement of a long serving senior leader. The business is now looking to appoint a Director of Engineering to take ownership of how its engineering work is planned, delivered, and enhanced. This is a hands-on leadership role suited to someone with a strong engineering background who enjoys working close to the detail, understands what good looks like on site, and can lead experienced engineers with credibility.
The Role
- You will lead a skilled and experienced engineering team delivering a varied range of site based light engineering services.
- The work spans complex installations, annual service contracts, specialist site projects, and machinery moves.
- Most customers are based in NI and RoI, but they have carried out projects in Europe and Australia.
- Working closely with operational managers, you will review current jobs, agree priorities, anticipate issues, and maintain a clear grip on delivery, cost, and safety.
- A key part of the role is identifying practical improvements to how work is planned and tracked and implementing change by taking people with you rather than imposing it.
What You Will Do
- Lead and support an experienced engineering team delivering site-based work.
- Maintain oversight of jobs to ensure safety, quality, delivery, and margins are protected.
- Work with senior colleagues on costing, pricing input, and commercial decisions.
- Manage scope changes confidently and engage customers when work moves outside agreed terms.
- Reduce inefficiencies and unnecessary overtime through better planning and control.
- Take ownership of health and safety compliance and engagement with third party auditors.
What We Are Looking For
- You will be a technically credible engineering leader with a formal engineering qualification and strong practical engineering experience.
- Experience leading engineering or technical teams in an operational environment.
- A track record of improving processes and successfully implementing change.
- Commercial awareness and the discipline to track jobs and performance.
- A collaborative leadership style that builds trust with experienced engineers.
- Experience in light engineering, material handling, or industrial services would be advantageous along with the ability to lead a team of 50+ engineers and cross functional Managers.
