General Duties

To work as part of the Youth Offending Court Team servicing the Birmingham Youth, Magistrates, and Crown Court to fulfill the statutory requirements placed on the Youth Offending Service by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and any subsequent legislation.

This will include:

  1. The Youth Offending Service promoting the quality of its work in partnership with criminal justice agencies and the judiciary, influencing remand and sentencing decisions, particularly in reducing the use of remands to youth detention.
  2. Undertaking assessments including safeguarding and vulnerability to determine the appropriateness of placements for children and young people entering the secure estate, delivering these services in line with the Youth Justice Board\’s expectations.
  3. Enforcement of statutory YOT orders, including preparing and conducting prosecution of breach and revocation proceedings in court.
  4. Collection, collation, and maintenance of data necessary for the efficient performance and evaluation of YOT services.
  5. Liaison with other agencies involved in the court process, including presenting and disseminating YOS information, formal reports, and interventions to judges and magistrates.
  6. Contributing to a service that offers equality of opportunity and considers the needs of children, young people, and their families or carers.
  7. Coordinating remands to local authority accommodation at the court stage.
  8. Producing placement information and post-custody reports within the Asset Plus framework as required by the Youth Justice Board.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to produce high-quality court reports.
  • Ability to coordinate assessments of young people regarding public protection, prevention of offending, risk, and safeguarding.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet short deadlines, and prioritize workload.
  • Ensuring the YOS electronic database is updated daily and contributing to statistical monitoring.
  • Good understanding of the role of a YOT Court Officer.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with court users, agencies, professionals, field teams, parents, and young people.
  • Ability to maintain concise records of formal processes and ensure appropriate dissemination.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a busy environment.

Essential Requirements

  • Must have an Enhanced DBS check.
  • Experience working within the criminal justice setting, including application of risk frameworks.
  • Experience working with young offenders and their families.
  • Experience meeting the needs of diverse racial, cultural communities, and young women.
  • Experience in report writing.
  • Experience undertaking assessments including safeguarding and vulnerability.
  • Working knowledge of Children & Young People Legislation, particularly criminal legislation applicable to young people and children.
  • Knowledge of the bail and remand process as it relates to young people.
  • Ability to work on Bank Holidays and Saturdays on a rota basis.
  • A social work qualification is advantageous but not essential.
