About the role: We are looking to grow our mechanical design team with 2x new hires, and we are open to bringing this person in as a Mechanical Design Engineer or a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, depending on the calibre and experience of the right candidate. Following recent investment, there is genuine scope for the role and the team to grow further, so we are keen to hear from strong candidates at either level. This is a fast-paced environment and high precision manufacturing, so we need passionate mechanical staff!

You will work proactively and collaboratively with clients, staff and other networked experts to provide comprehensive design and high-level, fit-for-purpose engineering solutions, and to produce high-quality, detailed and accurate engineering documentation that drives the successful delivery of projects and product development initiatives. Reporting to the Operations Director, you will be responsible for formulating and producing valid and viable design solutions quickly, taking projects from concept through to customer delivery. This is underpinned by an acute, practical understanding of mechanical systems, assemblies, 3D modelling, manufacturing operations, BOM creation, 2D drawings, and available materials and technologies. You will actively support the business development process through the creation of bespoke drawings for proposals and by meeting prospective and current customers to ensure design requirements are correctly captured and documented in the scope of work. You will also produce design-for-manufacturing specification documents which meet or exceed British engineering standards and approved codes of practice.

For candidates joining at Lead level, you will also take ownership of internal process improvements and industry-standard design release/change control methodologies (e.g. PDM), and will provide leadership and delegation to the mechanical engineers reporting to you.

What you will be doing:

  • Delivery of total life cycle design and engineering projects, including concept creation, theoretical and mathematical modelling, risk analysis, CAD development, practical modelling, testing, submission to manufacture and verification.
  • Collaborating with architects, clients, structural engineers, manufacturing partners and contractors from concept/feasibility stage on projects.
  • Producing fit-for-purpose design solutions and carrying out engineering calculations to ensure drawings meet required, robust industry and legal standards.
  • Preparing engineering documents, equipment specifications and cost estimates to meet contracted scope of work.
  • Supporting the business development process through input to proposals, and meeting and presenting to prospective customers.
  • Providing work direction to other team members (including subcontractors, as assigned), sharing knowledge and nurturing junior/upcoming staff in a professional and collegial environment.
  • Approving final equipment selections and drawing submittals.
  • Maintaining and building trusted relationships with key customers, clients, partners and stakeholders.
  • (Lead level) Driving internal process improvement and championing design release/change control best practice.
  • (Lead level) Delegating and providing day-to-day leadership to mechanical engineers within the team.

The skills and experience you need:

  • BSc/BA honours degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical design, industrial design, or equivalent experience.
  • Mechanical engineering design experience: minimum 3 years for Mechanical Design Engineer level, 5+ years for Lead Mechanical Design Engineer level.
  • Must be an advanced SolidWorks user and proficient with PDM; experience with Simulation is an advantage, particularly at Lead level.
  • Experience with some or all of the following: sheet metal, plastics fabrication, machining.
  • A proven ability to take responsibility for the financial viability and profitability of projects under your management.
  • Able to work independently while overseeing the work of other colleagues and responding to new and ongoing client requests.
  • Time-efficient working practices with a demonstrated ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • A strong communicator and attentive listener, able to produce high-quality technical documents and engineering drawings.
  • Competent with the Microsoft Office suite of software.
  • FEA and CFD simulation experience desirable.
  • Experience managing or mentoring people is desirable, and essential for candidates joining at Lead level.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary, based on experience.
  • 33 days annual leave (including bank holidays).
  • Death in service at 4 x your annual salary.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Enhanced parental leave policies.
  • Birthday day off.
  • Paid bereavement and sick leave.
  • Company salary sacrifice pension scheme.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Regular social breakfasts, lunches and team events.
