We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer with experience in industrial automation, robotics and motion control algorithm development to join our innovative engineering team, and play a key role in the specification, design and implementation of high-performance industrial motion control systems.

You will architect, develop, and optimise the algorithms and real-time firmware for our industry leading motion and robotic control system, and will collaborate cross-functionally with our hardware and application engineering teams to translate complex requirements into reliable, scalable, and safety-compliant solutions.

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in real-time industrial control, motion and trajectory planning, robotic kinematics and dynamics algorithm development, embedded operating systems (RTOS), and low-level driver development. A solid foundation in control theory and system modelling is essential, along with proficiency in C/C++ and embedded debugging tools. Additionally, knowledge of Linux based embedded systems, signal processing, motor control (servo and stepper), and industrial fieldbus communications (e.g. EtherCAT, CANopen) would be beneficial.

This position requires a hands-on technical expert who can drive architecture decisions, mentor engineers, and develop robust, maintainable code in performance-sensitive environments. Experience with industrial standards, functional safety, and deployment in high-reliability manufacturing or robotic systems is highly valued.

The team is involved in the full software development lifecycle, from requirement definition, design, implementation, integration, test, through to delivery and customer support.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for motion control and robotics platforms.
  • Implement and optimise real-time control algorithms for precision motion control.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate software with bespoke electronics and sensors.
  • Develop and troubleshoot software solutions on bespoke hardware platforms.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to maintain high standards of quality and reliability.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical discussions and project planning.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in embedded software development using C/C++ on embedded platforms.
  • Strong background in real-time systems targeting single and multi-core processors, including ARM™ based processors.
  • Demonstrable expertise in developing and testing motion control algorithms.
  • Experience of developing embedded real time RTOSs.
  • Solid understanding of robotics, kinematics, and their practical applications in automation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

Tools:

  • Embedded C/C++ toolchains, such as IAR™ and GCC.
  • MathWorks MATLAB™
  • Visual Studio™
  • Debug tools, such as Lauterbach™ and SEGGER™ J-ink, oscilloscopes and logic analysers.
  • Software configuration tools, such as Git and SVN/Subversion.
  • CI/CD pipeline toolchains.

Additionally, it would be beneficial to have:

  • Knowledge of standards for industrial automation products.
  • Experience of cyber security standards and the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).
  • High level programming languages; for example, Python, MATLAB / Simulink.
  • Knowledge of servo and stepper motors.
  • Knowledge of interfacing automation hardware with electrical systems and the principles of machine control.
  • PLC programming, preferably using the standard IEC61131-3 environment.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary.
  • Membership of Profit Related Pay (PRP) bonus scheme.
  • Matched personal pension contributions scheme of up to 5%.
  • Death in service insurance at 3x basic annual salary.
  • Access to an employee healthcare and well-being cash plan.
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and Remote GP services.
  • Remote/hybrid working option up to 25% of working time.
  • 25 days holiday per annum + your birthday.
