A world-class British manufacturer based in Plymouth, specialising in advanced sheet metal fabrication and the design and manufacture of modular workshop furniture used by some of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands. As a holder of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and the Red Dot Design Award, we are recognised for our commitment to precision engineering, innovation, and quality. Our integrated facility covers everything from initial CAD design through to laser cutting, CNC panel bending, powder coating, and full assembly all under one roof.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated CAD Design Engineer to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about design, manufacturing, and engineering to develop their skills in a fast-paced, world-class production environment.

Working closely with the Drawing Office Manager and other department heads, you will be involved in the full design lifecycle — from concept and CAD modelling through to production-ready drawings — with a particular focus on sheet metal components and assemblies.

  • Produce 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings for sheet metal components and assemblies using SolidWorks and SheetWorks.
  • Support senior engineers in the design and development of new products and bespoke fabrication projects.
  • Create and maintain accurate design documentation, BOMs (bills of materials), and revision-controlled drawings.
  • Apply design for manufacture (DFM) principles to ensure components can be efficiently produced using fabrication processes, including laser cutting, CNC folding, and welding.
  • Collaborate with the production and manufacturing teams to resolve design queries and support smooth handover from design to shop floor.
  • Contribute to design reviews, identifying opportunities to improve quality, reduce cost, and simplify manufacture.
  • Maintain organised and up-to-date CAD libraries and file management systems.

Requirements:

  • Degree or HND/HNC in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline or significant experience and proven ability in this area.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modelling and technical drawing production.
  • Experience with or strong understanding of sheet metal design principles (bend allowances, tolerances, material properties).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
  • Experience using SheetWorks (SolidWorks add-in for sheet metal) is highly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems or document control processes.
  • Exposure to DFM principles and an understanding of fabrication processes such as laser cutting, CNC bending, welding, or powder coating.
  • Experience in an industrial or manufacturing design environment (including placements or internships).

A supportive, hands-on environment where you’ll learn from experienced engineers and contribute to real projects from day one. Opportunities for professional development, training, and career progression within a growing, award-winning business. The chance to work on products recognised globally by some of the world’s leading automotive and industrial brands. Competitive salary commensurate with experience. On-site role at our state-of-the-art facility in Plymouth.
