About the role

In this role you will support the design and development activities of the Mechanical Engineering Department by delivering engineering projects and tools through the prototyping, testing, and design validation stages.

The role is responsible for evaluating product performance, identifying opportunities for improvement, and implementing design modifications where required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply sound engineering principles, analytical techniques, and industry standards to perform accurate calculations that support product design, development, performance verification, and compliance requirements.
  • Evaluate design assumptions, identify potential risks, and provide technically robust recommendations to support decision–making throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Develop clear and comprehensive technical specifications for engineering projects, products, and tooling, ensuring requirements are accurately defined, achievable, and aligned with customer, regulatory, and business needs.
  • Produce and maintain accurate quality assurance documentation, test records, inspection reports, and compliance evidence to support internal quality processes and external customer requirements.
  • Participate actively in product development reviews with the Engineering Manager, providing technical insight, progress updates, risk assessments, and recommendations to support informed project decisions.
  • Conduct inspections of products and assemblies during manufacture and development to verify compliance with drawings, specifications, quality standards, and project requirements.
  • Respond professionally and accurately to client technical enquiries, providing expert advice, troubleshooting support, and practical solutions to engineering challenges.
  • Prepare, review, and maintain technical literature, including operating instructions, technical manuals, product specifications, test reports, and engineering documentation.
  • Maintain comprehensive and organised technical files, ensuring all design records, calculations, drawings, specifications, test results, and validation documentation are controlled, current, and readily accessible.
  • Support traceability, compliance, and knowledge retention through effective document management practices.
  • Interpret test data and provide evidence–based recommendations for product acceptance, modification, or further investigation.
  • Identify opportunities for product enhancement, cost reduction, improved manufacturability, increased reliability, and enhanced customer satisfaction.

Required skills

  • Fluency with 3D CAD tools (preferably Autodesk Inventor).
  • Engineering calculations including pressure containment, mechanical strength, and thermal performance
  • Experience managing technical documenta on and change control in a PLM system.
  • Lead full–cycle design: requirements capture, CAD modelling, calculations, tolerance analysis Prototype, assemble, and validate performance
  • Oversee qualification testing for environmental and field compliance
  • Manage BOMs, ECNs, QA records, and specifications in line with QMS
  • Educated to degree level or above in related subject.
  • Able to demonstrate previous experience of working as a Mechanical Engineer and being able to use technical judgement when translating design concepts into practical engineering solutions.
  • Experience of successfully working to project deadlines, whilst demonstrating a systematic working approach to record keeping and adherence to quality management standards.
  • Excellent communication skill with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and accurately to both technical and non–technical audiences.
  • Competent IT knowledge and skills
  • Fluent in English, verbal and written.
  • UK full valid driving licence.

Desired skills

  • Knowledge of electrical / fibre optic processes.
  • Familiarity with design for manufacture (Df M) and design for assembly (Df A).
  • Exposure to oilfield tool design, high–pressure environments, material selection for harsh environments
  • FEA, material selection on for harsh environments
  • Hands–on prototyping or workshop experience
