We are seeking experienced and highly skilled Lead Road Workers / Civils Gangers to join our growing team and support both new and existing contracts across Devon. In this role, you will lead and supervise a small team of operatives, ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Ordering and managing plant and materials required for projects
- Interpreting utility plans, construction drawings, and technical specifications
- Ensuring that all team members follow Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) and adhere to safe working practices
- Completing site records, including work logs, daily progress, and safety checks
- Conducting daily safety briefings and ensuring the team understands and follows safety protocols
- Reporting any accidents, injuries, incidents, near misses, or damage to plant/equipment to management in a timely manner
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate the following qualities and qualifications:
- Strong awareness of health and safety practices and a commitment to promoting a safe working environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with the team and external stakeholders
- Proven ability to motivate, manage, and support a team, recognizing individual strengths and development needs
- Resilience and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- A valid driving licence, with experience driving vehicles (depending on licence)
- A valid CSCS card (essential)
- NRSWA qualification (essential)
- SSSTS qualification (desirable, but not essential)
- Confidence in managing confrontational situations and maintaining professional relationships with the public
- Basic IT skills, including familiarity with tablet-based systems for logging work-related information, timesheets, and email communication
- Strong ability to read and interpret utility and construction plans
- A proactive, problem-solving attitude and a “can-do” mindset
- Experience in completing site records and conducting safety briefings, ensuring compliance with safety standards
- Ability to travel as required to various sites
