Join our dedicated Outpatients team and play a vital role in supporting high-quality patient care.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistant to work within our busy Outpatients Department. This rewarding role offers the opportunity to work alongside clinicians, consultants and multidisciplinary teams, helping to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care to patients attending a wide range of outpatient clinics.

As a key member of the team, you will support the planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care, assist with patient appointments and bookings, and help ensure clinics run efficiently and smoothly. You will provide reassurance and support to patients throughout their outpatient journey while maintaining high standards of care and professionalism.

Main duties of the job

Support clinicians and consultants during outpatient clinics. Welcome, prepare and assist patients attending appointments. Book in patients and attend to their general needs during their visit. Measure and record physiological observations including:

  • Blood pressure
  • Pulse rate
  • Temperature
  • Height and weight
  • Visual acuity
  • Peak flow measurements
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs)
  • Venepuncture

Administer treatments such as eye drops following appropriate training and competency assessment. Undertake, record and follow clinical procedures and guidelines for tasks for which training has been received. Prepare and maintain clinical environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions. Ensure equipment is clean, safe and ready for use. Maintain accurate patient records and documentation. Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver a high standard of patient‑centred care.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications and Relevant Experience

  • NVQ 3 in Direct Care or equivalent qualification / experience
  • substantial experience as a HCA within a hospital setting
  • Experience of working in an urgent care environment / out‑patient department

Skills and Aptitude

  • Able to confidently work alone at times within the Out Patient department

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Computer literate and ability to use web‑based IT programmes
