We support patients and their families at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and at St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle and in the communities around the county. The care we provide is mostly funded by the generous people of Cornwall and beyond through our 25+ charity shops and a wide range of fundraising activities organised by us, our supporters and our Volunteer Fundraising Groups.

Our Fundraising team host lots of exciting events including parachute jumps, cycle rides both locally and overseas, half marathons, walking and other challenges throughout the county each year, all raising vital funds for our hospices.

As an Event Volunteer, you will be attending our organised events and being part of the team to help ensure they run smoothly and are a successful and positive experience for our supporters. The duties are varied and no two events are the same. The tasks will vary according to the nature of the event but may include:

  • Helping at the event registration desk, welcoming participants and families.
  • Selling tickets at stands.
  • Assisting with the setting up of tables, banners and merchandise.
  • Marshalling at car parks or out on the route of a run, cycle or walk.
  • Providing information and direction for participants.
  • Manning the refreshment table.
  • Handing medals and goodie bags to event finishers.
  • Bucket collections.

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to give a morning or afternoon of their time when we have an event coming up. You may want to volunteer regularly e.g. once a month or may only give a few hours once a year, for instance at a half marathon. The Fundraising team will provide you with information on what volunteer support is needed ahead of each event and how long we would like you to help for.

Desirable skills and qualities:

  • Enthusiastic and willing to get stuck in.
  • Reliability.
  • Courteous, friendly and approachable.
  • Be able to work effectively in a team or alone.
  • A great sense of humour.
  • Commitment to the ethos of Cornwall Hospice.

Induction and training:

There is no formal training required for this role, although Event Volunteers will be expected to liaise with the Fundraising event lead prior to the event and attend any pre-event briefing where appropriate to ensure all relevant information is provided to you.

  • To receive appropriate induction and training.

  • To have a safe working environment.
  • To be reimbursed for reasonable out of pocket expenses.
