The Tax Lead for the European region will serve as a key strategic partner to the business, responsible for driving tax planning, risk management, compliance, and digital transformation initiatives across multiple jurisdictions. This role will ensure that the company’s tax strategies support sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and compliance with evolving European tax regulations. The position requires strong technical expertise, cross-border collaboration, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders in a dynamic, fast-paced retail environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tax Planning & Structure Design
    • Develop and implement tax-efficient structures for domestic and cross-border transactions aligned with the company’s operating and commercial models.
    • Evaluate related-party transaction frameworks, ensuring proper transfer pricing alignment and optimized tax outcomes.
    • Identify tax risks, assess implications, and propose actionable mitigation strategies to support business expansion and strategic initiatives.
  • Compliance & Risk Mitigation
    • Review contractual tax clauses and operational arrangements to ensure full compliance with local and regional tax requirements.
    • Lead interactions with tax authorities, managing audits, inquiries, and dispute-resolution processes.
    • Enhance internal tax controls, supporting accurate filings and minimizing exposure to penalties or reputational risk.
  • Policy Analysis & Implementation
    • Monitor global and European tax policy developments (e.g., OECD, BEPS, Pillar 2, VAT reforms) and assess business impacts.
    • Drive policy adaptation efforts and ensure timely implementation of new regulatory requirements.
    • Support applications for tax incentives, exemptions, and regulatory benefits to enable efficient business operations.
  • System & Process Optimization
    • Lead the digital transformation of tax processes, including automation of filings, compliance workflows, and reporting functionalities.
    • Develop data-monitoring frameworks, dashboards, and SOPs to improve tax accuracy, traceability, and alignment with finance and business systems.
    • Partner with IT and finance teams to enhance system integration and data quality for tax-relevant activities.
  • Cross-Border Collaboration
    • Coordinate with domestic and international teams on tax filings, VAT/GST processes, refund applications, and cross-border regulatory alignment.
    • Oversee external advisors and tax intermediaries, ensuring efficient and compliant service delivery across multiple jurisdictions.
    • Resolve complex cross-border tax issues, supporting the company’s global expansion plans and local operational needs.
  • Special Projects & Capability Building
    • Lead internal tax training programs and knowledge-sharing workshops to strengthen organizational tax awareness.
    • Contribute to strategic tax projects, including M&A, restructuring, supply chain redesign, and new market entry.
    • Support ad-hoc tax matters to ensure comprehensive, timely support for business stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related discipline; advanced qualification (ACA, CTA, ACCA, CPA, or equivalent) preferred.
  • 8–12+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally within multinational retail, FMCG, or large corporate environments.
  • Strong knowledge of European tax frameworks, VAT/GST, transfer pricing, and cross-border regulations.
  • Proven experience handling tax audits, disputes, and multi-country tax operations.
  • Ability to lead regional projects, influence stakeholders, and operate effectively in a matrixed global organization.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with a hands-on, proactive mindset.
