About the Role
After two years of experience in civil engineering, you will be able to provide a higher level of specialised technical support to the Structures team, civil engineers and other construction professionals.
Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Complete the Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship, maintaining regular attendance and achievement levels
- Maintain your own continuing professional development
- Assist the Structures team by carrying out specialist technical activities related to service delivery
- Work closely with Principal, Senior Engineers, project managers and liaising with external clients
- Work with a team to complete specialist reports within agreed timescales
- Liaise with other teams and external consultants, such as representatives from Environment Agency, Historic England, Planning officers and others where required
- Attend site meetings to review works and provide specialist technical advice and guidance
- Utilise appropriate information technology, computer aided design and geographic information services for allocated work
We are looking for an individual with a strong passion for mathematics and a genuine interest in solving engineering challenges. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about understanding how structures function and eager to contribute to the development of schemes involving structural assessment, refurbishment, and design.
Our Structures Team is responsible for the inspection, assessment, maintenance, and design of a wide range of assets, including:
- Highway bridges and retaining walls
- Retaining walls and bridges on the public highway and public rights-of-way network such as the South West Coast path and multi-user trails, including the Saints Way and the Camel Trail
- Key infrastructure projects, such as the Newquay Strategic Route
- Provision of structural design work at Newquay Airport
- Specialist inspections of various structure types
- Design and maintenance of coastal protection assets and reactive works
In addition to new design work, the team delivers structural maintenance projects, including:
- Joint and bearing replacement
- Refurbishment design and assessment
Candidates should bring curiosity, problem-solving ability, and a desire to develop their engineering expertise.
Eligible to drive in the UK: driving licence or provisional driving licence and ability to achieve full driving licence within the first 12 months, plus access to transport and a willingness to travel to sites not serviced by public transport.
Current or predicted 3x A-Levels/Level 3 at AAB / DDM or above. Desirable: at least 1 A-Level/Level 3 in a Science or construction-related qualification. 5 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including maths and English.

- Working Hours: 37 hours per week
- Contract Type: permanent, full time
- Location: Cornwall - you will be allocated to a site and permanent supervisor upon appointment.
