Principle Objective

Reporting to the Managing Director – Chadwicks Builders Merchanting Division, the Operations Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the operational support strategy for the Builders Merchanting Division at Chadwicks Group. Working closely with key stakeholders, you will define our customer service offerings and ensure branches are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to operate effectively and efficiently whilst best meeting the needs of our customers.

Knowledge & Experience

  • 3-5+ years in a similar senior position
  • Significant experience of leading change initiatives in a large multi-site business
  • A good knowledge of the building materials industry
  • Proven ability to strategically solve problems and offer creative solutions
  • Superb project management skills

Key Responsibilities

  • The Operations Manager is a key member of the senior management team and will contribute to all elements of strategy within the business.
  • Lead on continuous improvement, introducing new technology, processes and ways of working to support our evolving operating model whilst integrating Lean thinking and Six Sigma methodology into operating processes.
  • Define the operating model for our branch network and transport function that delivers the highest standards at lowest cost.
  • Lead your team ensuring that clearly defined targets and objectives are defined and met on a regular basis.
  • Collaborate with Regional Directors and other senior stakeholders to ensure payroll resources are utilized efficiently.
  • Partner with our Category team to introduce standardized ranges across the estate and oversee the layouts of all branch locations to achieve consistent customer experience and offering.
  • Engage with our logistics and stock control teams to deliver efficient stock replenishment processes that prioritise customer availability and best-in-class stock management.
  • Coordinate training programs with support of HR and Regional Teams, to ensure colleagues are sufficiently trained to a high standard and continually meet the needs of customers.
  • Identify new opportunities to develop and grow the profitability of the builders merchanting division.
  • Work closely with branch managers to maximise sales and margin targets.
  • Partner with the Health & Safety team to ensure that health and safety rules, policies and procedures are fit-for-purpose and consistently adhered to across our branches, yards and warehouses.
  • Facilitate co-ordination and communication between support functions and across our branch network.
  • Review, evaluate and update existing internal controls and procedures.
  • Support the property team during store fit-out programs to ensure customer needs continue to be met.
  • Support new branch openings ensuring new locations are fitted to a high standard, resourced sufficiently and systems and procedures are embedded.
  • Oversight of Bulk DC model, and continually evolve in how it can shape and support our customer distribution model.
  • Oversee the implementation of a transport model that is cost-effective, innovative and customer-focused.
