Staff Backend Engineer – $10bn+ AI Company | Remote-First (UK) | Up to £180,000 + 15% Bonus
Each second, this platform handles 10,000 transactions, each one in around 50ms. Keeping it that fast while the company grows is one of the most interesting engineering challenges in AI right now, and they want a Staff Backend Engineer to lead it.
The business is valued at more than $10bn, has 500+ people and builds AI products with genuine real-world impact. Its engineering organisation is expanding quickly. The person in this seat will define the architecture and standards the rest of the team builds on.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Influence across the company. You’ll set technical direction for the whole engineering organisation, not just one team.
- Build systems that really matter. You’ll work on high-throughput, low-latency services where reliability is non-negotiable.
What you’ll be doing
- Architecting and evolving the distributed backend systems at the core of the platform
- Leading complex, cross-team initiatives from design through to production
- Pushing scalability, reliability, performance and security further as volumes grow
- Defining the engineering standards and architectural patterns others build on
- Shaping long-term technical strategy alongside product and engineering leadership
- Mentoring senior engineers and developing the company’s future technical leaders
What you’ll need
- Significant experience building and running production backend systems at scale
- Strong expertise in Go or another modern backend language
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems, concurrency, APIs, databases and cloud infrastructure
- Hands-on experience with high-throughput, low-latency, highly reliable systems
- A track record leading technical initiatives across multiple teams
- Excellent system design skills and sound architectural judgement
The package
- Base salary up to £180,000
- 15% bonus
- Remote-first, with occasional time in the London office
