The Department of Engineering Science intends to appoint a full time Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in Biomedical Engineering, from 1 October 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a fixed-term academic post, until 31 August 2032, based at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (OX3 7LD).

This appointment will strengthen the Department’s research in Biomedical Engineering and strengthen the research of the Biomedical Ultrasonics, Biotherapy and Biopharmaceuticals Laboratory (BUBBL). The group’s current expertise includes:

  • Applications of biomedical acoustics to non-invasive surgery, drug delivery, transdermal vaccination, immune-modulation and other emerging therapeutic ultrasound applications.
  • The development of novel signal processing techniques to enable real-time treatment monitoring, including cavitation detection, passive acoustic mapping and ultrasound localization microscopy.
  • The development and refinement of relevant pre-clinical models to enhance and validate the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-based interventions.
  • The initiation and contribution to first-in-human trials of novel ultrasound-based therapies.

Candidates with research interests that align with the above areas are welcome. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct original research in Biomedical Engineering with a particular focus on therapeutic ultrasound applications. They will hold a doctorate with significant post-qualification research experience in Biomedical Acoustics, Biomedical Engineering or a similar field.

The successful candidate will also assist in the teaching of their subject at the undergraduate and graduate level. This will include lectures, practical classes, demonstrations and design and project work. The subjects are expected to be in the general field of Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Biomedical Fluid Mechanics, Non-Invasive Therapies and other areas of engineering, depending on the interests of the appointee.

The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the delivery of undergraduate Course Work Modules, third-year projects and the supervision of fourth-year projects in biomedical engineering. Graduate teaching will also involve supervision of Masters and Doctoral students, including as part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Engineering Biology.

The successful candidates will report to the Head of Department and act as the leader of their research group, setting clear task objectives, developing productive working relations and line-managing the members of the team. They contribute to their development through induction, appraisal, and coaching.

Salary (£): £56,623 - £65,336 per annum, with a discretionary range to £73,296 per annum (Inclusive of Oxford University Weighting).
