An opportunity exists for a Full Time, HCPC Registered Senior Biomedical Scientist wishing to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments at Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals. The post is for Senior BMS with Haematology and Blood Transfusion experience to cover all shifts if required, full training and competency will be provided prior to commencing shifts. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic professional in the North West London area with good travel links into several mainline London stations.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all of the shifts to support the needs of the 24/7 requirements of the service as allocated by the Head of Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratories. The ideal candidate will contribute to providing a professional and technical laboratory service working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department and to work independently performing routine analyses with support as required from the Head of Department.
The Laboratory is responsible for servicing the Haematology and Blood Transfusion pathology needs of a large GP catchment area, with Maternity, Haematology Oncology and large surgical variety, including St Marks Colorectal surgery. There is also a large company Haemoglobinopathy referral centre, involved in Neonatal screening and as such the Blood Film Morphology seen is extremely varied with training second to none. The Blood Transfusion laboratory has Grifols analysers on both sites and the team works alongside the Trust Transfusion Practitioners, Lead BT Clinicians and the Hospital Transfusion Team to promote Patient Blood Management.
The successful candidate will be appointed as Quality Officer and will be responsible for a range of duties, including but not limited to:
- Liaising with the QMG Department to ensure the prompt communication, raising and documenting of incidents, including the identification of tasks and ensuring their timely closure.
- Ensuring controlled documentation is in place and in use and that staff training records are kept up to date.
- Contributing towards and ensuring the smooth running of local audits and closure of Non-Conformities.
Main duties for the Senior BMS include helping support the running of the laboratories, managing the bench and following up internal and external queries. To ensure records and paperwork work is kept up to date and all the results are reported with the agreed turnaround times. Monitor and order stock to ensure efficient running of the service. SBMS is required to ensure external referral reports are actioned in a timely manner to ensure results are set to the clinical teams in the required time frame. SBMS deputises for and works for the HOD to organise and manage the laboratory and is responsible for supervising and monitoring a team of BMS on a day to day basis. Manages ongoing operations in the department ensuring turnaround times and quality standards are maintained. Covering the bench if required if shortage of staff. Ensure staff are complying with the laboratory policies and procedures. Participates in raising and dealing with incidents, CAPA, audits and non-conformances. Other duties as assigned by the Head of Department.
