We are seeking to appoint an experienced Programme Manager to cover a period of maternity leave, to oversee the operational delivery of Oxford EARTH, the University of Oxford’s strategic interdisciplinary research programme focused on building sustainable and equitable natural resources. This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in a high-profile initiative addressing the challenges of natural resource management for the net-zero energy transition.
Working closely with the Programme Director, Professor Mike Kendall, the Research Director, Professor Jon Blundy, and colleagues across nine University departments, you will help drive collaboration and support impactful research on climate and environmental sustainability. This maternity leave cover post is available until November 2027, or until the substantive postholder returns, whichever is earlier.
You will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operational management of Oxford EARTH, supporting the programme’s strategic direction and ensuring the successful delivery of its objectives. Working closely with the programme’s directors, administrator, and communications officer, you will oversee:
- Project planning
- Financial management
- Reporting
- Risk management
- Governance
while coordinating activities across multiple research work packages. You will foster collaboration between researchers and external partners, organise programme meetings and events, manage relationships with funders and stakeholders, support recruitment and induction activities, and coordinate the development of future funding proposals to help sustain and grow the programme.
It is essential that you hold a master’s degree or higher, or have equivalent experience in Earth and environmental science or a related discipline, together with substantial programme management experience in a complex research or higher education environment. You will have excellent organisational, financial, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple priorities and build effective collaborative relationships across multidisciplinary teams. Strong written and verbal communication skills, experience of organising events, and a proactive, adaptable approach are essential. A project management qualification, knowledge of University procedures, and an understanding of environmental policy and sustainability challenges would be advantageous, alongside a commitment to fostering an inclusive and collaborative working environment.
This full-time, fixed-term post would also make an excellent secondment opportunity for a suitable candidate, subject to agreement with their current department.
