The Astrophoria Foundation Year (AFY) seeks to appoint teaching staff to deliver Early Modern and/or Modern History teaching (maternity cover) as part of the AFY Humanities course.
About the role
The post holder will offer teaching for two History modules of the AFY Humanities course: the Hums 4 Option Paper and the Hums 5 Extended Essay project. In Michaelmas Term, the post holder will meet the Foundation Year History students and introduce up to three possible Early Modern and/or Modern Option Papers which they would be willing to teach in Trinity Term, as well as outlining the Early Modern or Modern areas of history which they would be willing to supervise extended essay projects in across the 2026/27 academic year.
A colleague in Mediaeval History will also offer a similar number of Option Papers and supervision expertise in Mediaeval History topics. The amount of teaching required of this post holder is dependent on student choices. There are six Foundation Year students taking History and History with Joint Schools in the 2026/27 academic year. The post holder will be expected to prepare and deliver teaching in a way that will help Foundation Year students working between SEEC Levels 3 and 4, progress towards the intended learning outcomes and be the first contact for student matters.
Students who successfully complete the Astrophoria Foundation Year will be awarded a Certificate in Higher Education (CertHE). This role will suit someone with a commitment towards the aims of the Foundation Year, who seeks experience of devising, delivering and assessing one or more paper(s) based on their own Early Modern or ModernHistory research interests, and in developing experience in supervising student’s independent research. The majority of the teaching, if it is required, will take place in Trinity Term 2027 when the Option Paper is delivered over seven teaching weeks and the Extended Essay is written up over the first six weeks of term.
This is a position, available on a fixed-term contract until September 2027 to cover a maternity leave. Please note the amount of teaching available will be dependent on student choices.
