Full Time, Permanent - Professional Services

We are seeking a permanent Finance Officer to join our team at the Headington Campus. In this role, you will be integral to our financial operations, ensuring compliance with University regulations and procedures while delivering a high standard of service to internal and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Head of Financial Operations, the Finance Officer will provide financial and administrative support across the University, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and delivering a high standard of customer service. This is an excellent opportunity to develop experience within Faculty Finance and broaden knowledge of University financial operations.

Faculty Finance supports all faculties across the University, working closely with academic and professional services colleagues to provide advice, financial monitoring and robust processes that support teaching, research and student activity.

Key responsibilities:

  • Act as a first point of contact for financial queries, providing advice and guidance on policies, procedures and systems
  • Liaise with internal teams and external suppliers on purchasing, supplier set‑up, sales and general ledger queries
  • Monitor and resolve held, logged and exception reports to ensure timely and accurate payments
  • Support budget holders through expenditure monitoring and the provision of regular financial information
  • Process and monitor expense claims in line with University policy, escalating non‑compliance where required
  • Support month‑end and year‑end activities, including reconciliations, open orders and audit queries.

Skills and experience:

  • Experience in a finance or similar role within a complex organisation
  • Experience using computerised financial systems and strong Excel skills
  • Good analytical skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work collaboratively

Location and working pattern: Based at the Headington Campus (Buckley Building) with hybrid working available. The role is likely to require 1–2 days per week on campus, subject to service needs.

As an Oxford Brookes employee, you will enjoy a total of a minimum of 25 days holiday, rising with your service, plus 8 bank holidays and additional university concessionary days (normally 5 per year). We encourage and support hybrid working where the role allows and ensure that you have the necessary equipment to allow you to work flexibly.

We have an extremely competitive Local Government Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions, as well as providing all staff with access to an occupational health service, financial education, and a comprehensive employee assistance helpline. We prioritise the wellbeing of our employees - physically, mentally and financially - and we provide a diverse and comprehensive benefits package to support our team.

In addition, all employees have access to:

  • Discounted rates for the university sports and gym facilities
  • An on-site nursery (at Headington Campus; waiting lists for some ages).
  • Discounted travel options
  • Relocation scheme (for moves over 30 miles, subject to terms of the scheme)
  • Training and development opportunities
  • A connected community - Brookes have a wide variety of staff networks, which instil a sense of community and offer employees a space for support, guidance and friendship, making Brookes a vibrant and inclusive place to work.

Please Note: This role will not attract sufficient points to obtain a sponsored Skilled Worker visa under the points-based immigration system, however applications are welcome from candidates who don’t currently have the right to work in the UK, but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route.

Equality, diversity and inclusion: At Oxford Brookes, inclusivity is one of our five guiding principles: we take positive steps to create an environment in which we celebrate, value and provide equal opportunity to all. We are committed to recruiting from the widest possible pool and welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates who embrace our values, regardless of their background. As a Disability Confident Employer we guarantee to interview any disabled applicant who meets the essential selection criteria.
