The Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in Modern Languages, with expertise in Spanish, German and/or French. Applicants with expertise in one European modern language alongside Chinese or Arabic will also be considered.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s professional programmes, principally the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Modern Languages programme and the MSc in Learning and Teaching (MLT). This role offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced Modern Languages teacher to move into teacher education.

The PGCE, commonly known as the Oxford Internship Scheme, has an international reputation for excellence and innovation, built over more than 30 years. The MLT is a two-year, part‑time Master’s programme that, like the PGCE, emphasises the development of research‑informed pedagogy at both general and subject‑specific levels. Opportunities to contribute to the MSc in Teacher Education (MTEd), a part‑time distance‑learning programme, may also arise.

The post‑holder will contribute to teaching, assessment, supervision, curriculum development and academic administration across the Department’s programmes. Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and delivering lectures, seminars and workshops;
  • Developing course content;
  • Marking and providing feedback on student work;
  • Supervising assignments and dissertations.

The role also involves close collaboration with partner schools and other institutions, including supporting students on professional placements, liaising with mentors and tutors, undertaking school visits, and contributing to the assessment of professional practice. The successful candidate will also participate in admissions, contribute to departmental committees and strategic initiatives, and engage in research and scholarly activity related to learning, teaching and teacher education, drawing on this work to inform their teaching and wider contribution to the Department.

Candidates will hold a relevant Master’s degree or higher, together with a good first degree in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, German, French or Chinese. They will possess a UK teaching qualification, or equivalent recognised for Qualified Teacher Status, and have substantial experience of successful Modern Languages teaching at secondary level. They will demonstrate strong pedagogical knowledge, the ability to design and deliver high‑quality teaching, and sufficient subject expertise to contribute to both teaching and research.

Experience of mentoring or tutoring within initial and/or continuing teacher education is essential, while higher education teaching experience would be an advantage. The successful candidate will bring strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative approach, familiarity with current research in the field, and evidence of scholarly engagement, including publications.

The post is available from 1 September 2026 and is offered on a part‑time basis at 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours per week) until 1 August 2030. We may also consider applications from candidates seeking an appointment of no less than 0.4 FTE.
