Oxford Lifelong Learning in the Department for Continuing Education is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in History with a focus on the 19th and 20th century British history. The post will be held in the Department for Continuing Education, with a Fellowship at Kellogg College. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the teaching and research within the History portfolio and will contribute to the strategic direction of the Department and the broader academic community.

About the role

The Associate Professor in History will be a key member of the history subject-area team. They will teach on the history programme and other related subject-area programmes. This position is for a historian with a focus on 19th and 20th century Britain, and we would have a particular preference for a historian working in a global context (e.g. British connections with Europe, the British empire, transnational, or migration histories). They will be part of the academic community of the Department, a full member of Oxford’s History Faculty, and engage in research. The position comes with a Governing Body Fellowship at Kellogg College, one of Oxford’s graduate colleges. The history portfolio in the Department has potential for growth, and it is anticipated that the role would also involve the development of a series of online short courses at FHEQ Level 7, that could feed into a new postgraduate award-bearing course.

This is a full-time (FTE) position, available on a permanent contract upon completion of a successful review. The review is conducted during the first 5 years.

About you

The successful candidate must have a doctorate relevant to 19th and 20th century British history, preferably within a European or global context. You will have demonstrable experience of teaching at all levels of university education and able to adapt teaching to a diverse student body, including those from a range of backgrounds. In addition, you will have a track record of high-quality research and publication relating to 19th and 20th century British history. The successful candidate will have academic leadership ability, dynamism and an innovative spirit, together with the ability to bring to the post a strategic vision for the development of the subject area.

You will be teaching and examining students on a range of programmes, including the Undergraduate Certificate in History and, at graduate level, supervise student dissertations on the Postgraduate Certificate and MSt in Historical Studies, the MSc in English Local History and MSt in Literature and Arts. You will also supervise doctoral students on the DPhil in English Local History and DPhil in Literature and Arts, as required. You will serve as course director of the Undergraduate Certificate in History, in rotation with other members of academic staff. You will contribute to its teaching, and will be an examiner for the course. In addition, you will have the role of Assessor for the history pathway of the Undergraduate Certificate of Higher Education as well as serve as the Director of Studies of short courses in history, working closely with the Director of the Short Online Course programme and Director of the Weekly Class programme.
