We are seeking a proactive and organised CNC Production Team Leader to manage the day-to-day operations of our CNC machining department. Reporting to the CNC Product Manager, you will lead a team of CNC operators across multiple machines, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality production. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with strong CNC operational knowledge and proven team-leading experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You will also be responsible for maintaining high housekeeping standards in the department, recruiting and onboarding new team members, supporting the ongoing development of the team, and, with the support of the maintenance team, overseeing general maintenance of CNC machinery. A key part of this role is to drive Lean practices and support a culture of continuous improvement within the CNC department.
Key Responsibilities
- Daily Team Leadership
- Supervise and support CNC operators across designated shifts.
- Plan, prioritise, and allocate workloads to meet production schedules.
- Lead daily shift briefings and ensure smooth handovers between shifts.
- Conduct SQCDP Shift Meetings.
- Production Performance
- Monitor machine output, quality, and efficiency using data and visual management tools.
- Work closely with the CNC Product Manager to identify and implement performance improvements.
- Apply Lean manufacturing tools and problem-solving techniques to reduce waste and improve flow.
- Ensure machines operate at maximum efficiency, escalating issues when required.
- Quality, Standards & Housekeeping
- Ensure production output meets quality standards.
- Maintain high housekeeping and 5S standards throughout the CNC department.
- Support first-off inspections, in-process checks, and operator-led quality control.
- Coach operators to consistently follow work instructions, quality procedures, and cleanliness requirements.
- Recruitment, Onboarding & Development
- Support recruitment and selection of CNC operators and other departmental staff.
- Lead onboarding and induction processes for all new starters.
- Identify skill gaps and arrange cross-training opportunities.
- Contribute to the creation and upkeep of competency matrices and personal development plans.
- Health, Safety & Maintenance
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture within the team.
- Conduct basic risk assessments and ensure PPE and safety procedures are followed.
- Respond promptly to near misses and incidents.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team to plan preventative maintenance, complete repairs, and maintain CNC equipment in optimum condition.
Experience & Skills Required
- Previous experience in a CNC machining environment (timber, furniture, or general manufacturing preferred).
- Strong understanding of CNC operations, tooling, and production workflows.
- Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a production setting.
- Experience in Lean manufacturing and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
- Experience in recruitment, onboarding, and team development.
- Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer literacy; experience with production tracking systems (OEE knowledge advantageous).
- Commitment to continuous improvement, high housekeeping standards, and a hands-on leadership style.
