Role Summary
The IT Engineer’s role is to support and operate a high-performance computing (HPC) environment alongside Microsoft Windows and 365 environments, ensuring reliable, secure, and high-performing systems across a hybrid estate.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and administer the local High-Performance Computing (HPC) environment, including hardware, OS, user access, and routine tasks.
- Monitor system performance, capacity, and availability; proactively resolve issues.
- Support HPC workloads including scheduling, storage, networking, and compute optimisation.
- Manage Linux servers (RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu), including patching, hardening, and automation.
- Implement and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and security controls.
- Collaborate with engineering and research teams to optimise HPC usage and performance.
- Maintain clear documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.
Cross-Platform Responsibilities (Windows & Microsoft 365)
- Manage identity and access across Linux and Microsoft environments.
- Implement and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and security controls.

- Serve as the first point of contact for IT support within the organisation.
- Help monitor and maintain internal IT systems, including servers, networks, printers, and cloud services.
- Contribute to asset management and inventory tracking.
- Test new hardware and software before full-scale installation.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure the stability and performance of IT systems.
- Assist in IT projects as required to support company objectives.
End-user Support
- Administer and support Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, Teams, Entra ID).
- Provide Windows desktop and server support across the organisation.
- Provision and manage laptops, desktops, and mobile devices.
- Support onboarding and offboarding (accounts, access, and equipment).
- Respond promptly to IT support requests from employees.
- Provide clear and helpful instructions to end-users.
- Assist with hardware setup and deployment.
- Provide training to employees on the proper use of IT systems and tools.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues.
- Install, configure and maintain software and hardware components of computer and network systems.
Job Requirements
- Linux Systems Administration: ~3+ years (enterprise or HPC environment preferred).
- Microsoft 365 / Windows Support: ~5+ years.
- Experience working in hybrid environments (Linux and Microsoft stack).
- Familiarity with HPC technologies (e.g. OpenHPC, PBS, SLURM or similar schedulers).
- Scripting/automation experience (Bash, Python, PowerShell).
- Strong troubleshooting capability across systems, networks, and applications.
Qualifications/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field or equivalent industry experience is preferred.
- 3+ years Linux Systems Administration.
- 5+ years Microsoft 365/Windows Desktop Support.
- Strong experience in Linux systems.
- Familiarity with basic networking concepts (IP, DNS, DHCP).
- Good troubleshooting mindset and a calm, user-friendly approach to resolving issues.
- Good written documentation habits and verbal communication skills.
- IT troubleshooting and problem-solving, with the ability to handle technical issues efficiently.
- Knowledge of industry-specific compliance requirements, regulations, and standards.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with colleagues and vendors as required to achieve IT objectives.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact with team members, employees, and external vendors.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage workload effectively.
- Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing IT needs and challenges.
