An advanced materials company developing graphene for high-performance applications is seeking a Polymer Applications Scientist to help turn innovative materials science into commercially viable polymer formulations.
Practical industrial processing experience is a key priority for this appointment. We are particularly interested in people who have spent significant time operating and troubleshooting twin screw extruders, developing polymer compounds and translating formulation trials into repeatable industrial processes.
Experience gained in thermoplastic compounding, masterbatch, additives, pigments, fillers or fibre-filled polymers would be especially relevant.
The role:
Based in Cambridge, you will take ownership of laboratory and pilot-scale trials, working directly with industrial customers and compounding partners across the UK and Europe. Your work will include:
Developing and optimising graphene-modified polymer formulations through twin screw extrusion, compounding and melt mixing.
Improving dispersion and resolving practical processing issues, including agglomeration, poor wetting and processing instability.
Supporting scale-up from laboratory formulations to industrial compounding processes.
Assessing material performance through rheology, melt flow analysis, mechanical testing, DSC and TGA.
Managing technical projects, communicating trial results and providing practical guidance to customers and partners.
Running your day-to-day laboratory activities independently, with remote support from the wider technical team.
What weโre looking for:
Substantial hands-on industrial experience in twin screw extrusion and polymer compounding, with a strong understanding of how formulation and processing conditions affect material performance.
A proven ability to troubleshoot processing problems and deliver consistent, reproducible results.
A degree or equivalent qualification in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
Strong polymer characterisation skills and confidence interpreting experimental data.
Clear communication skills and the confidence to work directly with customers and technical partners.
The ability to manage multiple projects and work autonomously.
A PhD or postdoctoral background is strongly preferred, alongside the practical processing expertise central to this role. Experience with graphene or other carbon nanomaterials would be an advantage.
This is an opportunity to bring your industry compounding expertise to advanced graphene applications and have a direct impact on product development and customer success.
