The Role
Copello is working in partnership with a leading organisation within the maritime and defence sector to recruit a Principal Engineer β Product Safety. This is a senior technical role with responsibility for leading product safety activities across complex engineering programmes, ensuring safety is embedded throughout the full lifecycle.
As a Principal Product Safety Engineer, you will play a key role in the development and maintenance of Product Safety Management Systems and Safety Cases on a major, long-term programme. You will be trusted to resolve complex technical challenges and provide safety leadership across multidisciplinary teams. Relocation support may be available, subject to eligibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement and maintain the Project Safety Management System within a Systems Engineering framework.
- Produce and manage Project Safety Management Plans and Justification Plans.
- Lead product safety hazard and risk identification, management and assessment activities, including modern techniques such as STAMP and STPA.
- Influence the development and delivery of the Project Safety Case, including Safety Case reports across the full project lifecycle.
- Undertake peer reviews, checking, verification and assurance activities to demonstrate the robustness of Safety Cases and supporting documentation.
- Provide technical oversight, mentoring and peer review for junior members of the Product Safety team.
- Apply wider Safety Case, Quality and Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) management system documentation effectively.
Skills & Experience
- Degree in a STEM subject or equivalent qualification.
- Awareness of environmental challenges impacting complex engineered products.
- Experience delivering traditional safety analysis techniques (FMEA, HAZOP, FTA, etc.).
- Proven experience compiling and delivering Safety Case Reports and supporting safety documentation (plans, processes, requirements).
- Experience developing and working within a Project Safety Management System.
- Ability to interpret complex technical data and produce clear, logical and defensible safety arguments.
- Professional chartership or working towards chartered status.
- Knowledge of submarine lifecycle phases including design, manufacture, assembly, commissioning and testing.
- Experience with modern safety analysis techniques such as STAMP, STPA and FRAM.
- Understanding of Systems Engineering international standards and their application within a safety engineering context.
- Experience leading technical meetings and cross-functional working groups.
