Configuration Engineering Lead – Defence
Location: Surrey
SC Clearance Required | Hybrid & Flexible Working
Copello are working with a leading defence client who are looking for an experienced Configuration Engineering Manager. You will be responsible for leading a key function within a highly regulated, mission-driven defence environment.
In this pivotal role, you’ll ensure functional excellence across the Configuration Management capability — shaping strategy, leading a high-performing team, and playing a hands-on role in the UK’s most advanced defence projects.
The role:
- Lead & Develop Talent – Line manage and mentor a team of 2–5 engineers, ensuring safety, performance, and professional growth.
- Functional Excellence – Own delivery of the Configuration capability across multiple programmes, ensuring alignment with engineering plans and business goals.
- Capability Building – Identify skills gaps, deliver training, and manage tools and assets to ensure cutting-edge Config performance.
- Project Leadership – Act as functional lead on high-impact projects, planning and reviewing deliverables, and ensuring quality, compliance, and delivery to time and cost.
- Process Ownership – Develop, implement, and continuously improve Config processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as Defence Standard 05-057.
Experience:
- Strong background in Configuration Management within defence, aerospace, or maritime sectors
- Deep understanding of config principles across product lifecycles (design, docs, software, data)
- Proven leadership and resource management experience
- Familiarity with defence regulations and export controls
- Degree-qualified or equivalent technical experience
