Position reports to: Technical Director
Position is responsible for: Switchgear Design
Main purpose of job:
We are looking for a candidate that has the ability to review a client single line diagram/project scope and turn it from a sketch/concept to a mechanical and electrical design that will meet the clients' needs. Utilising AutoCAD and Inventor software, the candidate will be able to deliver the following solutions:
- Mechanical General Arrangements
- Device Schedules
- Single Line Diagrams
- Electrical control diagrams including Change over, metering and control circuits.
- Inventor mechanical design drawings for components
- Full 3D assembly drawings
- Liaison with mechanical fabricators for component fabrication.
- Create full BOMs for mechanical and electrical components.
Project Management with internal teams and direct with clients to meet project specific and internal deadlines.
Knowledge of Current switchgear standards including BS EN 61439-1:2021.
Support and assist in delivering client FATs, on-site set up and commissioning where required.
Maintain document libraries including As Built and O&M documentation.
Expected Behaviours:
The role requires a proactive, detail-oriented engineer who takes ownership of design delivery, communicates effectively with clients and internal teams, and consistently produces high-quality, compliant designs. The individual must demonstrate strong organisational skills, technical competence, and a commitment to meeting project deadlines while maintaining engineering standards.
- Technical Ownership & Accountability: Takes full responsibility for designs from concept through to delivery. Applies engineering judgement aligned with BS EN 61439-1:2021 and other relevant standards. Ensures accuracy, completeness, and traceability of all drawings and documentation.
- Detail-Oriented Execution: Produces high-quality outputs (AutoCAD, Inventor, schematics, BOMs) with minimal rework. Maintains strict version control and document integrity (especially for As-Built and O&M packs). Proactively identifies design clashes, risks, and omissions early.
- Client-Centric Mindset: Interprets client single line diagrams and specifications accurately. Communicates clearly and professionally with clients to resolve ambiguities. Balances technical compliance with practical and commercial considerations.
- Collaboration & Cross-Functional Working: Works effectively with mechanical fabricators, internal engineering teams, and project stakeholders. Shares information proactively to avoid bottlenecks. Supports FATs, commissioning, and site activities as part of the wider team.
- Project Delivery Discipline: Manages own workload to meet deadlines and project milestones. Understands dependencies between design, procurement, and build phases. Flags risks to timelines early and proposes mitigation. Seeks to improve design efficiency, standardisation, and repeatability. Keeps up to date with evolving switchgear standards and technologies. Contributes to improving internal processes, templates, and libraries.
- Problem Solving & Initiative: Works independently to resolve design and technical challenges. Escalates appropriately when needed, with proposed solutions—not just problems. Adapts designs pragmatically when faced with constraints (space, cost, manufacturing).
- Professionalism & Reliability: Delivers on commitments consistently. Maintains clear, structured communication (internally and externally). Demonstrates a proactive, “ownership” mentality rather than a task-based approach.
