Established in 1982, COOPERS is an independent, family-owned consulting engineering practice based in Chester.

With around 30 staff, we provide structural, civil, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering services, specialising almost exclusively in residential developments for many of the UK's leading national and regional housebuilders.

Our reputation has been built on practical engineering, long-term relationships with our clients and providing continuity of service for more than four decades.

Following the planned retirement of our long-serving Principal Structural Engineer, we are looking to appoint an experienced Chartered Structural Engineer to join our team.

The Role

This is a hands-on technical role where you'll remain actively involved in structural design, calculations and engineering problem solving.

Working alongside one Structural Engineer and two Senior CAD Technicians, you'll provide technical leadership while continuing to undertake design work yourself.

An extended handover period will allow you to work alongside our current Principal Structural Engineer, becoming familiar with our clients, projects and working practices before taking over the role.

Our workload is centred on residential developments for established housebuilder clients.

While we'd always welcome opportunities to strengthen existing relationships and develop new ones, the role is primarily focused on delivering practical engineering solutions and maintaining the high technical standards for which COOPERS is known.

Responsibilities

  • Structural design and calculations using TEDDS and structural analysis software.
  • Design of traditional, vibro-improved, piled and raft foundations.
  • Design of retaining walls and associated structures.
  • Design in masonry, reinforced concrete, structural steel and timber.
  • Investigation of structural defects and development of practical remedial solutions.
  • Providing engineering solutions to technical issues arising during construction.
  • Checking calculations and technical work prepared by other engineers.
  • Mentoring and supporting one Structural Engineer and two Senior CAD Technicians.
  • Assisting with quotations and maintaining strong relationships with our established client base.
  • Projects include
  • Residential developments ranging from approximately 10 to 400 dwellings.
  • Traditional, vibro-improved, piled and raft foundations.
  • Small-span bridges and ancillary structures.

About You

  • Chartered Structural Engineer (MIStruct E preferred, although Chartered MICE candidates with significant structural design experience will also be considered).
  • Strong practical knowledge of low-rise residential construction.
  • Confident carrying out structural calculations and technical design work.
  • Comfortable making engineering decisions and solving practical construction issues.
  • Experience checking the work of other engineers.
  • Interpretation of ground investigation reports.
  • Foundation solutions in challenging ground conditions.
  • Ground floor construction.
  • Ground gas protection measures.

What We Offer

  • Excellent salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience.
  • Full-time role preferred (40 hours), although reduced hours may be considered for the right candidate.
  • Office-based role at our Chester headquarters.
  • Long-term opportunity within a successful independent consultancy.
  • An extended handover with our current Principal Structural Engineer.
  • A close-knit team where technical excellence, practical engineering and long-term client relationships are genuinely valued.

This is a full-time, office-based role at our Chester headquarters. Hybrid or remote working is not available.
